Fabricated Boyfriend - Mental Health Message Board

Hi .

I have just found out today that my best friend (who died 18 months ago) daughter, has been fabricating a boyfriend. To the point of having us talk to him on Messenger and almost meeting him at least 5 times. To where he worked, his family down to illnesses and people being admitted into hospital. I dont know how to deal with this information and I am concerned that is is caused to her not dealing with the death of her mother. Her grandmother suffers mauchanhausens disease and she has been around her all her life and I am concerned that she has learnt from the best on how to deceive people. She is a good girl. But life is really sad and hard for her. She has lost many people in her life over the last few years and im scared this is just going to escalate. Maureen

I would just be honest with her and let her know that you have discovered her boyfriend doesn't exist and would she like to talk about it. Dealing with mental health issues it is best to be honest and not just go along with her delusions or whatever is going on with her. She may be glad to know she doesn't have to pretend.

Be honest with her but don't corner her... because right now if you go straight up just like that, first she would feel naked, and the shame will turn in anger and distrust in you; so talk to her approach her in a way she ask you for help... no that you have pitty or think she's crazy... convince her she needs help... convince her she doesn't need to lie anymore... that she's a good girl right how she is...right how she's standing right now, help her; if she has develped some sort of pathology it's time to help her and prevent she falls deeper, because pathological liers are really hard to treat and help. Good luck, you are really going to need it.
