Hello there,

My name is Dave and I've posted on these boards as far back about a problem of mine as 2004. My breathing problem all started when I was hit in the face with a basketball in gym class in 7th grade. I had two successive nosebleeds, both prolonged--the second much worse than the first actually--on that day within about an hour because of the accident.

I'll make this post short and say that while I do think this problem did start out as physical, my doctor says it eventually came to be a mental health problem. I think the nosebleed messed up my nose and septum and I had surgery to correct that in May of '06. I put off seeing that doctor again who performed the surgery until recently on the advice of another ENT. Mistrust issues with the doctor saying the surgery would help and it not helping led me to not see him until today.

The ENT who performed the surgery opened up my nostrils at today's visit with some spray all the way but I still felt congested today during my visit--although improved.

He also said that this perceived congestion is a problem in the medical field that doctors can't seem to figure out.

I can't seem to find much info on the problem though online. I'm wondering if anyone out there can give me some insight and share similar experiences. Also, are there any good unbiased sites that I can do some research on? I have problems breathing through both my nose and mouth, but it's worse through my nose.

I have to wonder if getting the physical problem fixed much sooner--the accident happened in grade 7 and I didn't have surgery until after my 2nd year in college and I'm turning 21 in November--would have not allowed this mental problem to occur.

I'm glad I have found some closure on this--it's much better to know what the problem is.
