He sounds exactly like Me. I do not know how anyone over 35 can just fall right off to sleep in this world. The best thing for me is to avoid caffeine at night (chocolate, tea, coffee) and try a GNC Strawberry Melatonin pill. Sounds ridiculous but it is fantastic. My last suggestion is harder to swallow: Yoga.
Yoga is 5K years old for a reason. It is a Miracle how it relaxes you and changes your perception on things. Good Luck.
