Disorganized thinking? Or Processing Disorder? - Mental Health Message Board

Hi,

Can anyone describe what disorganized thinking really is? My son has some problems in school and the Psychiatrist thinks it may be disorganized thinking and is looking at a schizoaffective disorder. We just don't see this. His couselor is convinced that he has mild asperger's, although the specialist does not think he has enough communication issues for that.

He does not have any clanging, loose association or any of the other terms that I see associated with thought disorders or unusual ideas. Maybe thought blocking?

What he does is in school, he seems to have problems "wrapping his mind around" things. He sometimes loses his train of thought and pauses. He seems to have trouble concentrating. His teacher say he can be "spacey" and daydreams a lot. It does not seem that he merely has trouble with a concept, but more in processing. He describes it as trying to get something, but just can't get his mind to cooperate.

Is that disorganized thinking? Anyone with schizoaffective, doe this sound like your experience?

I am not a psychologist, but after reading your post I have to give you my thoughts on this. I feel that nowadays so many kids are diagnosed and medicated for no reason. I know several kids on Ridalin, after being diagnosed wit ADD. I am not saying that you son shouldn't be diagnosed or be on some medication, but be very careful because this is about your child. I have personally bad experience with being diagnosed and being put on unnecessary psycho farmaka. Oh, so I wish that I had known then what I know now. I think that you are doing the right thing in posting on this board. Maybe the internet or other chat rooms can shed some light on what is going on. Is your son under some kind of stress or pressure? Is he overwhelmed with something. The answer to his condition may be very simple and I hope that it is.

Would your son's school pay for a neuropsychologist evaluation? I know that to provide "proof" of brain damage to insurance companies etc., that I needed approximately 19 testing hours to get a clinical evaluation of damage and what areas of my brain were affected. I no longer process things well especially verbally. I have retaught myself a lot of my written processing skills, but still struggle with the verbalization and focusing. Apparently I have something in one of my brain areas that does not connect. Mine is due to a brain injury, but that type of behavior/feelings are not attributed to brain injury only. It would be great if they would provide for that testing, perhaps it would give you some peace of mind to have someone that specializes in diagnostics for the brain. Best of luck to you!
