loads of questions ( help please) - Mental Health Message Board

last night was my daughter's first visit with her new councler. this women seem to be on the ball but she threw a new diagnois at me ( for give my spelling)!

on top of what we knew were were dealing with, add,odd, passive aggressive disorder and depression, she tells me she thinks my little girl may be hearing voices. ( i put it that way cuz i can't recall how to spell the technial term.)
when i asked her what made her think this she mentioned how dh always ***** her head to one side when asked a question as if she is listening to someone give her the answer or she will look up like she is hoping the answer will fall out of the sky. she also brought up the fact that dh always refers to me as " her" never mom. and that dh refuses to look at me. infact she has a hard time making eye contact with anyone. is this common with this disorder? i know it runs in families and after talking to my grandmother this afternoon i have learned that it is very much in my family on my father's side. she said dad gets is from grandpa's side. i am so confused. the councler is going to do some indepth testing before coming to any conclusions,and i with out a doubt plan to get more than on opinon before i let anyone give my child powerfull mind altering drugs. she is only 12.

can anyone tell me of a few good places to start looking for answers? i am looking for support groups in my area but have not found any yet.

heya i am 17 yrs old and i have many mental illnesses one of which is phycosis, (hearing voices and having dillusions) this is what you have descibed your daughter as having. i wish that i could say that there was other ways of curing it othere than drugs, but there isnt. i know how hard it is for a mother to deal with coz i have to see my mom go through it every day. so i know how you feel. it is good that they have diagnosed it early coz it will be quicker to cure. i am here nearly all the time so if you wanna chat i am here. take care of both of you

eye contact can be taught to people, lack of it can sometimes just be shyness
as an alternative to meds, try to find out if she is unhappy about anything, also perhaps diet or food allergies may be responsible

also get her hearing checked

actually we have been down that road. she was even tested for atusim because she doesn't like to make eyecontact. diet and alergys was one of the first things we looked at when she was two. of course then according to the doctors i was just being a nurotic mother. we looked into it again when she was diagnosed three years ago with the add.

you are right in questioning those things though. to often a person is told they are mentally ill when in fact its something else. right now we are just taking things a day at a time.
