Question Seroquel

Hey~
I was just wondering, for those of you who are on or were on Seroquel, what you thought of the lawsuit going on right now against Seroquel regarding it causing diabetes. I just recently went on Seroquel myself, for depression and anxiety, along with Remeron. I'm at 125mgs of Seroquel which is a really low dose, but its only to help the Remeron work better. Anyways, I just heard of this lawsuit today, and that Seroquel can possibly cause diabetes (not to mention the other anti psychotics that can cause diabetes- but Seroquel has the highest risk).

Also- has anyone on Seroquel experienced hot flashes as a side effect. Or experienced migraines when you missed a dose?

I am on 400mg/day of seroquel and 60mg/day of paxil. I haven't heard anything about the diabetes scandal but I do know that seroquel has worked miracles for me (so far) I have been on it for 3 or 4 weeks. Pretty much all of the side effects have worn off for me. I guess my body is building a tolerance. I know that probably didn't help you, but it's always good to find someone taking the same meds as me.

Take care

Wowser, I'm shocked at what I've just read about Seroquel causing diabetes.

I've been on Seroquel for over a year, and on my mother's side of the family, almost everyone including my mother's siblings and their children are all diabetic! I'm so alarmed and angry that my own physician doesn't seem to be aware of the long-term side effects. My doc tends to hand out medication willy nilly!

I'm seeing him this afternoon, and now that I know about this, I'm definitely discussing it and I want to be off it immediately.

The only thing I've noticed since taking Seroquel is in the beginning, it made me extremely tired. When I take it at bedtime, I find it takes about 1.5 hrs. before I begin to feel groggy and fall asleep.

Since I've been taking this medication, I have noticed that I am usually quite warm. My family physician has been inclined to think that it was the psychotropic medication. I feel that since reading about hot flashes it may be related to the Seroquel.

Thank you for the information!

yea, i've talked with my parents about the possibility of seroquel causing diabetes and have decided to start weening myself off of it because diabetes is common in my family as well. not good.

glasshour- i always take all my meds at once right before i go to bed at night. and sometimes the time can be pretty eratic (some nights at midnight, some nights at 2am). I havent had any problems regarding what time i take it. Also- my dr said that i can take a pill of 25mg dose whenever i feel anxious and i need to. I havent had to do that but he said if i needed to i could.

It isnt good to stop taking your meds cold turkey tho. u should gradually go off of them over a span of time depending on how high the dose u are on. Side effects and withdrawls are bad for some people who quit cold turkey, plus its not good for your brain chemicals if u just all of a sudden stop the meds.
Also- i think this happened with me. My perscription ran out so i was without 100mg pills for 2 days, but i kept taking the 25mgs. but i went from 125mg dose a day to 25 mg dose a day and i got bad headaches, plus now that i've gone back on the seroquel at my normal 125 mg dose i really dont think it's worked the same since. I've heard that from drs too, that sometimes if u stop taking your meds and then u start up again, sometimes the pills dont have the same effect, and sometimes dont work at all.

thanks for the answers about the hot flashes, i tried looking online for side effects of seroquel without much luck, and im still having hot flashes on and off which i think is weird. i go to my psychiatrist soon so ill ask him about it.

thanks for all the replies

I'm a nurse specializing in mental health. I take seraquil and have known several people that have been on this medication. Seraquil (like all antipsychotic drugs) has many serious side effects that COULD affect you. The most serious being the Extrapyramidial effects. I have never seen, read, or heard anything from a reliable source that even hints at seraquil directly causing diabetes. Seroquil however, can cause weight gain, and obesity is a major contributer to type II diabetes.
