Question Is this considered addicted to the internet?

Hi all,
I am always online chatting with my online friends and help others in need when I can (meaning when I am not depressed myself) or I am blogging or I am busy looking @ the weather or looking at the latest clothes at my fave shops. I guess you could say that I am on the internet for 3-5 hours a day at tops. My roommate/friend said that I am ALWAYS on the computer talking to my friends and not paying attention to her. I told her that was not true. Well, yesterday the internet was down until around late evening. I was very sad, worried that my friends would think that I did not want to talk to them and I bored out of my mind. I don't drive, not married in my 30's and I am having a major struggle getting a job. My only friend/roommate and I have been arguing more than ever before so I am wondering if all of this is contributing to my wanting to be online all the time? You know to ecsape the harsh pain of my relality of what I am going through? To mask the hurt of feeling so rejected by everything, guys, jobs, my only friend/roommate, my family.....

I hope that you know that i love nothing more than talking to my online friends, that is the one things that I most enjoy in my life!!!! My online friends have been so warm loving and kind to me and I am very blessed to have them as friends to talk to all the time!!! These friends are more like my family!!!

I look forward to your kind advice on this matter. Thank you

If you are truly on the internet for only that long each day, I'd definitely say you aren't addicted. I am online way more than that (well, I watch stuff too online, like hour shows and such, so that's my TV time as well), and I am not addicted. Sometimes I get bored when the internet's down, but it's not like I go through physical withdrawal. If you do, then I would say yes, but it doesn't sound like you are.

I'm curious, do you know these people IRL too or just online? FWIW, my brother has lots of online friends but is extremely lonely... because there's only so close you can get to someone online. I would caution against making them your *only* friends, though I see no problem with making online friends in itself.

Re: Is this considered addicted to the internet?

Addiction has nothing to do with how long you spend doing something. It has to do with whether it's interfering with your life.

IF it's not, then it's not a problem. IF it is interfering with your life, and you can't quit or cut down, then you may be addicted. Only you can answer that question. Are you satisfied that your social life is predominantly online? That would be an important question to answer to start figuring out whether you have a problem.

In general though, if you're worrying a lot that you might be addicted to something, there's probably a good reason you're worrying about it.
