haldol (haloperidol and benztropine)

i was recently prescribed haldol by my primary dr.(not psychiatrist). this is my concern. a friend of a friend is taking haldol that was prescribed by her psychiatrist, but she is also taking benztropine. she said her psychiatrist prescribed it the same time he prescribed haldol. she was told it is a drug that would help counteract the potential awful side effects of haldol. is haldol that potent that another drug must be taken along with it?? it makes me wonder why my regular dr.didn't prescribe benztropine when he prescribed my haldol. this haldol stuff has me concerned.

Re: haldol (haloperidol and benztropine)

haliperidol should be prescribed with causion it can cause extreame restlesness twithy legs arms and hands i would suggest you go back to your dr and ask if there is anything else he can prescribe before resorting to HP the drugs they use to calm the side affects often dont work so please get a second opinion
what is it you arebeing treated for?

Re: haldol (haloperidol and benztropine)

Bluecloud, thank you for your reply. I was prescribed Haldol for anxiety. I have asthma and my primary care dr. thinks if I can control my anxiety it will lessen my asthma attacks. But again, I'm kind of concerned about the side effects of Haldol.

Re: haldol (haloperidol and benztropine)

hello i really hope you did not start taking the haldol. haldol is a very old potent drug i have never heard of it being used to treat just a anxiety disorder this is a drug used to treat bipolar disorder or people who suffer from hallucination schizophrenia. the effect from this drug can be devestating. there is a high chance of a person getting movement disorders that could lead to ereversiable side effects. if you really need to take a antipsychotic med there are others out there that do not cause a high rate of severe reactions like haldol.some are zyprexa, risperdal, seroquel. i think your doctor might not be aware of these newer medications since he is not a specialist in that feild of medicine. best of luck
