Hello to Everyone - It has been a Long Time
Hello to Everyone I have missed. My thread was closed a long time ago and I have not written another in a long time time as so much has happened both good and bad. My father, my hero, Mr Norman Harold Forin, succumbed to his disease on October 8, 2007 at 11:39 a.m. at NYU Hospital in New York City. My mother, my sister and her husband and eldest daughter were at his side. He was not supposed to die that day, that weekend or anytime soon for that matter. The meso had spread to his liver, the doctors think, but that is not what caused his death. He had done well on the first line of chemotherapy - alimta, cisplatin and avastin. He hardly had any side effects. In fact, at times he felt stronger than he had in previous months and was even able to go back to Florida (where he and my mother lived). When the first line therapy stopped working, he agreed and was even excited about participating in a kind of "funky" individually designed chemo where a biopsy is taken of his particular tumor (can be dangerous) and then it is sent to some place in California where they test its sensitivity to many types of chemotherapy agents. It turned out dad's tumor was sensitive to gemsar (not sure of spelling) which wasn't used as much anymore in favor of alimta and cisplatin (which he had already been on and which was starting to affect his kidney function). There was one other drug called sutent which is a kidney cancer drug and which his doctors were reluctant to put him on since it had many difficult side effects and which he may not react well to. Dad was eager to begin treatment and although we all hoped and prayed, there was stability at first, but then growth. He seemed to be deteriorating in terms of his appetite, weight, strength, etc But not in terms of morale, hope, fight and commitment to live. He asked his doctor - what next?
