Worrying symptoms

Hello

I would like some advice, please. I have recently found that our garage roof is made of asbestos and so am going to remove it. I have been very anxious and therefore reading a lot about asbestos on the Internet. One thing that I found was a photo of a boiler with asbestos insulation in a bad state around it. It was exactly how our boiler looked in the house my siblings and I grew up in.

My mother has had thyroid problems and breathing problems due to a salicitate (don't know how to spell it, sorry) allergy. My two brothers and I have problems with our throats, enlarged necks, itchy ears, phlegm, itchy noses and short term memory loss. Are these asbestos-related symptoms?

From what I have read, there is no cure at all to asbestos-related diseases. Is this true?

Thanks.

Re: Worrying symptoms

Please be careful if you are going to remove the asbestos yourself. You have to have the write equipment ie clothing, tools black plastic to wrap it, you have to wet it etc etc. My advise is to contact someone who no's what they are doing ask get advise. Asbestos is very dangerous
It depends on what asbestos disease you are referring to Mesothelioma, asbestoses
Hope this helps

Re: Worrying symptoms

We have old fashioned asbestos/vinyl tile on the floor. You can tell if it's got asbestos because it gets hard as rock and cracks off easily. Was popular about 50-60 years ago.

So I talked to someone who owned an asbestos abatement company a few years ago and he told me to wet it down with soapy water the night before removing it. Really let it soak in. That is to keep it from floating off while you are removing it. It's the tiny particles that float in the air that you can inhale that are so dangerous.

So wet down the ceiling from both sides if you can and let it soak in. Use regular dish detergent with it. Then wear a mask(best you can find) and just cut it into pieces and seal it up ASAP. Handle it as little as possible.

It's all the repeated exposure that is so dangerous.

good luck..........Jenny

Re: Worrying symptoms

2 weeks? How awful.

Best wishes with that. I've decided to pay a specialist company to remove the asbestos even though it costs a bomb.
