Probable Missed Miscarriage

I had a positive pregnancy test last thursday (26th october). I wasn't expecting it at all, however I soon came around to the idea, and even began to get a little excited. Since my periods were irregular before (due to a history of an eating disorder) my GP could only guess by rough dates, so estimated me at 8-9 weeks pregnant. This past wednesday (1st november) I woke up to light bleeding, some red, but mainly brown. I made an appointment with my GP who scheduled me for an early pregnancy scan. I had prepared myself for the worst, since the brown discharge has continued. I had my scan this morning, and everything was present, however she said the size was alot smaller - maybe only 6 weeks at 3.6mm. She couldn't find a hearbeat - which she said is usually detected at even just 3mm, and has rescheduled me for a scan on the 16th november. She said that in her experience, it doesn't look like a viable pregnancy, and it is likely I have had a missed miscarriage. I can't wait 2 weeks to know for sure, even though I am sure I have lost the baby. I suffer with depression anyways, and this on top is just too much. I hate this limbo ...........

Re: Probable Missed Miscarriage

hi. sorry you are having to go through this horrible experience. I presume you went for your scan in an early pregnancy unit here in the UK as they almost invariably make you wait 2 weeks for your next appointment in case you are just earlier than anyone thought and this is a reasonable gap to ensure they can make an absolute diagnosis at the next appointment. However, if you call them and say how wretched you feel they may well bring you in earlier. I would definitely give this a go, if you were already measuring over 6 weeks then they would be able to see if you are at the 7 week point next week and if not then at least you can make some decisions about what course of action you want to take. The general attitude I have encountered is that at such an early stage the unit staff do not expect you to be distraught about a miscarriage and yet we all know that it is a devastating feeling however far along you are. Call and tell them you need to go again this week, via your GP if necessary. I have found if you GP if firm then they will see you and you can escape from the horrible uncertainty. Best wishes to you and I hope you get good result, you never know, but really try to put your mind at rest sooner rather than later. xxx

Re: Probable Missed Miscarriage

Thanks for your reply Kelly, it's so comforting to know there are people out there who can offer their support like this.

I had a phone call this morning from a Community Midwife saying she had been contacted by my GP informing her of my pregnancy. She wanted to arrange an appointment. It was just terrible to have to explain what had happened on Friday. Of course, she was comforting and supportive and wished me the best etc ...... but I just really wish that phone call had never happened.

I will take your advice and consider phoning the EPU about maybe bringing my appointment forward ..... I wont hold my breath though.

I am due to go back to work on Wednesday night. Part of me thinks it would be good to keep my mind active, but part of me is scared that I wont be able to cope and that something may happen whilst I am at work ..... i.e - the actual miscarriage.

Thanks again for your support.

Karen. Xxxxx
