how long do you bleed if you had a miscarriage?

hello,

i am was wondering if someone can tell me how long one would bleed if experienced a miscarriage?
this passed monday (feb 27) i am supposed to be 6 weeks pregnant. i don't have too much pregnant symtom except a mild case of nausea in the morning. this is my second pregnancy. I started spotting sunday morning and very mild cramping. and by monday morning the spotting became a full blown period the cramps was bad but tolerable. I call my ob dr. office but the people who answer the phone said they don't have any open appointment and the only time available is in april 7th. then i passed a clots (sac like) in the same afternoon then then started bleeding heavily. i filled up a pad withing 15 minutes but that only last for a few hours. The bleeding slowed down significantly on tuesday morning. wednesday and today is only pinkish streaks. i am quite sure i had a miscarriage based on the sac like clot i passed out on monday. but the bleeding was quite short considering i only bled heavily one afternoon after the sac came out. the bleeding pretty much stop the next day. i think it good in that case but i was wondering if it's possible i didn't miscarried??Ibecause still feel some nausea in the moring?

i appreciaate any kind of advice and input.

Re: how long do you bleed if you had a miscarriage?

First of all, I would call your doctor's office and tell them you need to come in before then. If it was a m/c you need to be seen at least to get a blood test to check your hormone levels. Then need to be down to zero to make sure you have no retained product from the miss. I had my first miscarriage at 7 weeks and needed a D&E done. My next 2 were earlier on and passed on their own. Each time my levels were checked by my doctor. I bled at most for about 1 week with each miscarriage. The rule of thumb is that if you are soaking 1 pd per hour, you need to be seen to make sure you are not bleeding out. At the least I would get the office to have a nurse or doctor call you if they can't get you in. My next step would to be to find a better doctor. I hope everything goes well for you!

Re: how long do you bleed if you had a miscarriage?

Hi Andrea,

thank you for your reply and i am sorry to hear about your experiences. I tried calling the Dr's office several time but they simply refuse to see me any earlier. on a positive note, my bleeding has stopped. although i still get this nausea feeling in the morning, but everything seem fine. I think i'll just wait to see what happen. i am in the middle of writting my dissertation and preparing for a major move. Everythingiis really hectic around here.

Take Care. and thanks again. it's really nice see your response.

Re: how long do you bleed if you had a miscarriage?

Hi
I am sorry that you re going through all this. I am also sorry in saying that i think that you m/c. However this needs to be confirmed medically.
I was pregnant in July and started bleeding. When i went to the local hospital they told me there s nothing much they can do and sent me home. I went to another dr who examined me had my blood levels checked and did an US to eliminate the chances of ectopic preg etc.
I was send home and the dr told me to call her if i pass a clot sac like thing since that confirms the m/c .which in fact i did a few hrs later. I did a follow up a week later. The bleeding only lasted 2 days and it wasn t as heavy as you described it.I also remember terrible cramping pains for which i had to take pain killers.
I can imagine that you re busy with your dissertation. However if i were you i would see to it. . .. go to another dr.If it is a m/c the fact that you did all you could will help you through the healing process. If you didn t m/c then you have the duty to do all you can to identify any underlying problem.

I am very sorry that i m/c though i thank god that i decided to go to the 2nd dr . Even though i could do nothing to prevent the m/c i know i did all i could. This gives me a better feeling about it.

Take care of your self
Amy

Re: how long do you bleed if you had a miscarriage?

I'm glad to hear that the bleeding stopped. I don't want to get you nervous, but I would see what I could do about getting a blood test at least if they won't see you otherwise. If by any chance you miscarried and have any retained product, you could get an infection. If you miscarried a molar pregnancy, you need to make sure your hormone levels are back to zero because of the risk of cancer. I'm going through this now and it's quite serious. The chance that it was molar is slim, but there is always a chance!
