Miscarried- how long is bleeding supposed to last?

Hello everyone,

I am posting this here to see if anyone can help me. Unfortunately, the doctors office I have been dealing with during this miscarriage has been beyond rude and completely unhelpful so to avoid calling them again, I thought I could get some help here. I really don't want to go back there if I don't have to.

I found out I was pregnant with Baby #3 on Oct 20th 2012. During the next week, I had some mild cramping and then on Fri Oct 26th, I started spotting. I went to the ER on Sun Oct 28th, as the bleeding was showing no signs of stopping, and it was confirmed by ultrasound that I was almost 7 weeks pregnant but the baby was showing 6 weeks growth and there was no heartbeat (Incomplete miscarriage). I was sent home to complete the miscarriage naturally. The bleeding became very heavy that same night and I began to pass clots. I was due back at this doctor on Tue Nov 6th. When they did the ultrasound to see if it had passed, the baby and sac were still there, despite all of the bleeding I had. They suggested the D &C but I wanted to do this naturally because I was scared of surgery and scared of the risks involved. They gave me pills to help it pass and told me to come back Mon Nov 12th for follow-up and if I had not passed it by then, they would perform a vacuum procedure in the office. After I took the pills (2 by mouth, 2 vaginally as directed), nothing really happened. Bleeding increased but only by a little and the cramping never got bad. I did pass a few large clots though. When I went back on the 12th, the ultrasound showed my uterus to be clear, except for some blood and a few clots, and that the procedure was not needed. They then gave me more of the same pills to help the clots and remaining blood pass. This time they told me to take all 4 vaginally. Again, the pills seemed to not do anything more than what I was already going through. That was 10 days ago and I'm still bleeding like a period, with very small clots. From the first time I noticed the spotting to today, I have been bleeding a total of 27 days. I am very ready for this to be over, physically and emotionally. I feel very tired all of the time from bleeding and I can't seem to move on emotionally while the physical symptoms of miscarriage remain. I have read that bleeding times vary and you will continue to bleed as long as anything remains in the uterus but since they told me it was clear, I don't understand why I am still bleeding. What is the average time of bleeding after miscarriage? I would love some input from anyone who has experienced this before, especially the prolonged bleeding afterwards. Sorry for the long post but I wanted to be a detailed as possible. Feel free to ask me questions if needed. Thank you everyone and I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

***Additional comments: I have no signs of infection like fever or soreness and they also prescribed me Progesterone-Only birth control pills which I started yesterday)
