Those previous times you had mono, was it also confirmed by a heterophile antibody test (i.e. monospot?) In a healthy individual with a normal immne system, getting EBV-induced mononucleosis is VERY unusual. There are other infections, though, which can cause mononucleosis OTHER than EBV (such as CMV to give an example).
Are you still having fevers? Have you been tested for HIV?
Has the doctor ever ordered an Epstein-Barr Virus Antibody panel? It's nice because it comes with an interpretation of the results (past vs. current infection.)
To me, it sounds like your Mono. "acting up" again. I know someone who's had it "come back" a 2nd time.
As far as how long it will last, my boyfriend had it around age 25, and he said it lasted a few months... described the awful fatigue you're describing and said he felt horrible for a few months (I think around 3 months...sorry.)
I hope you feel better soon!
PS: I wouldn't worry about it turning into Lymphoma. Just get another CBC in a few months to put your mind at ease.
Thank you so much plasmadiumovale! I did have the EBV Antibody panel twice now. The first result was 6 weeks ago with a 'Equivocal' for current infection, and 'Positive' for convalescent infection. Last week they repeated the test with the exact results.
Doc says she would think I would be feeling good based on those results-with an odd day of fatigue, so she's concerned.
She has a CT scheduled and a biopsy for me to be sure what's going on.
I had 3 separate cases of EBV mono with 2 relapses of previous infections. My immune system still hasn't recovered 100%. My last known new case was a year ago and I've still not recovered from the fatigue and my lymph nodes remain swollen. I've been on multiple anti-virals and it never helped.
Hi, whilst its unusual its not unheard of to have it multiple times. I was dx first time 3 years ago, very severe case was off work for several months, then again 18 months ago quite mild, now found out today have tested postitive for a third time and feel quite awful most of the time. Just had to cancel my place at a music festival in a few weeks, can't bear the thought of 50,000 people in a field with potentially 50,000 different infections for me to pick up. Take care of yourself!
