Does Anyone Know Why Mononucleosis Is A Risk Factor for Hashi's??

Hi, All,
I was reading < edited > that having had mononucleosis is a risk factor for Hashi's -- does anyone know why this is the case? Does it matter WHEN you had it (e.g, last month or thirty years ago)?? I had a really bad case of mono when I was about six, so this naturally piqued my interest.

Just curious if any of you have ever heard about a mono connection to Hashi before?

Thanks!

M

I had mono in junior high school. I have Hashimotos and Graves antibodies. I have heard about the link before, but I don't know anything more than that right now.

Re: Does Anyone Know Why Mononucleosis Is A Risk Factor for Hashi's??

Epstein-Barr virus is highly associated with practially all autoimmune diseases including MS, Hashi's, Lupis, etc. It's also a common trigger for CFS. It's thought that susceptible people who get mono will go on to have immune system dysfunction and autoimmune disease as a result of the virus even if they develop immunity to EBV.
Since about 80% of the population has been infected with EBV, obviously not everyone goes on to have an autoimmune disease-- it seems to only affect certain people in this way-- probably based on genetic predisposition.

Re: Does Anyone Know Why Mononucleosis Is A Risk Factor for Hashi's??

Thanks for the replies! This question fascinates me because I've often wondered if my getting mono at such a young age (six) had anything to do with my multiple autoimmune issues. Since the body's immune system isn't fully developed until about age fourteen, it seems that an invasive virus like mono could really wreak some havoc. According to my mother, I was never the same energy-wise after the mono; even my personality changed!

For those of you who've had mono, do you also have multiple autoimmune-related issues (besides Hashi's or Graves)?

I have been told I probably have Sjorgren's Syndrome which is autoimmune but was only told that based on symptoms, I never had the lip biopsy.

Re: Does Anyone Know Why Mononucleosis Is A Risk Factor for Hashi's??

I have always wondered if I have had it in the past as we rarely went to the doctor......just was told most of the time that it was in my head and to "snap out of it".

Can a person who has never been tested for Mono find out if they have ever had it or do you have to be tested when you think you have it?

They can test for the antibodies for the virus if you've had it in the past. My husband has positive antibodies but doesn't remember ever getting mono.

Re: Does Anyone Know Why Mononucleosis Is A Risk Factor for Hashi's??

If you tested the entire population for the EB antibodies, nearly everyone would have them. Many cases of mono are so mild, you'd never associate it with anything except feeling under the weather for a few days, which is probably why Jav's husband does'nt remember it. It's such a common illness that I have a hard time accepting studies that attempt to suggest a definite association of EB with AI diseases. Up until about 1980, almost everyone got chicken pox sometime in their lives. Why not associate AI disease with that... or mumps... which everyone also got?

I'm not aware that I ever had mono, but I have two AI diseases.

Re: Does Anyone Know Why Mononucleosis Is A Risk Factor for Hashi's??

I had mono really bad. Now, I have Graves and Hashimotos, most recently I developed rheumatoid arthritis and I believe a gluten intolerance or celiac.I was casually tested for the celiac, came back negative despite my symptoms, so I will have to push my doctor more. My autoimmune began with the thyroid, mostly Graves first.

I had never heard of the link with mono and thyroid disease, but I also had a bad case of mono when I was young, but didn't develop hypothyroidism until 20 years later.
