I have been going through this for almost 6 months. It is a bit a of a story but I need some help so please hang in there if you can provide any. On Tuesday October 11 I had oral sex with a girl but did not have intercourse. I left her place and was driving home and began to feel a bit sick. I stopped the car and threw up and was a little worried.
Two days later I began to have a pain in my neck. It then spread to my left arm just below my bicep and then to the back of my legs just below the knees. By Sunday I was really feeling the affects in most of my body. Over the next couple of weeks I developed joint and muscle pain all over.
I am a student at University at Buffalo and set up an appointment with the doctor because I was worried of an STD. This late October if I remember correctly about two weeks after having the oral sex. The doctor sent me to the lab where they took urine and blood. They ran a wide range of tests and two weeks later when I got the results they all were negative.
I was relieved but still in pain so I set up another appointment a couple weeks later and had tests run for all forms of Hepatitas. The results were all negative but the doctor said my liver function was elevated. So a couple weeks later I met with the infectious disease specialist and he said I most likely had a "mono like" illness. I had more liver function tests and they went down a bit but were still elevated.
In mid January, more than the 3 months after my oral sex with that girl I had and HIV test done for a 2nd time to be safe and it was negative. My doctor told me I wouldn't need to have another one later.
So now it is getting close to the end of March and while greatly decreased, I am still feeling the affects of this. It is Monday March 19 and I am probably going to set up another appointment later this week with the UB doctors.
This is my question. My doctors say I have a "mono like" illness. Mono has an incubation period of a month or more. I strongly feel my illness was caused by this sexual encounter, but I vomited not too long after sex and began feeling the affects 2 days later. What virus has an incubation period that short and would last this long. While not showing up on the numerous tests my doctors have given me.
Also the second question is can I infect anyone else? I have not had sex since this happened but my doctors tell me it's a "mono like" illness so I shouldn't be able to infect anyone at this point right? There is a girl I am interested in and if just couldn't put someone else through this. I won't do anything with anyone until I find out for sure.
I was an extremely active person before this but a barely do anything anymore and it has effected me both greatly both physically and mentally. Anyone who can provide any help at all please do so. I would greatly appreciate it. I want my life back.
Re: My doctors tell me I have a Mono like illness...
Hello I just got told I was positive for the Epstien Barr Virus Wednesday. I have had no fever or nausea but I have been extremely tired. I'm usually very active but this has got me down. Tried to work today and lasted a hour and had to come back to the house and sleep. The doctor told me that I was positive for the Epstien Barr Virus and to treat it like mono. I was wondering if you have that too. Since your doctor said you have a mono like virus? Has he tested you for epstien virus?

Mono comes from the Epstein Barr Virus. But my doctor said I had mono, not Epstein Barr. I went on disability for 3 weeks back in April to recover. I could have used a lot more to be honest.
I still have major fatigue and other issues, but that's because they think the mono triggered Celiac. Still in the midst of testing for that
Are you going to be able to take any time off to rest? That's the only way to get over mono I'm told.

Thanks for replying. I can't get any info from anyone on here about EBV. Sorry you are still feeling bad. I will be going back to the doc Tuesday to get some more test so wish me luck. So tired of feeling like I'm in a haze all the time.
