negative spinal

I received a negative result for my spinal but am still considered having an abnormal mri scan. My doctor is having me do another scan in 9-10months. Is it possible to still have ms with a negative tap? He says I definitly have ms symptoms but not enough to start me on medicine yet. Should I get another oppinion?

Re: negative spinal

JAYCASA1231,

Studies have shown that if MS is treated earlier there is a greater chance of lessening the complications. It concerns me that your doctor thinks it is not necessary to start medication. I would advise looking for an MS specialist to consult.

Re: negative spinal

Thanks for all the responses back. Yes I am seeing an MS specialist. He did say he wouldn't hesitate to refer me on to somewhere else if I wanted to. I think my adnormal mri just doesn't look exactly like ms lesions but yet all my tests have ruled out everything else. My symptoms were extreme dizziness, numbness and weakness. He did say if I have any other issues in the next 9 months to contact him. I just don't know how to feel about it all. Thanks for Being here for me!!!!

Re: negative spinal

I would recommend a second opinion - my lesions weren't in typical MS locations (I had a second neuro look at my MRI as well) - have pretty minor symptoms at this time - tingles, burning, little eye weirdness. what is your current neuro saying caused these lesions?

Re: negative spinal

The radiologist called them lesions. The MS doctor just keeps calling them spots because they don't look like the typical ms lesions. He saysm I definitly have an abnormal mri with ms like symptoms. Not only is there 5 or so spots but there's a line of white matter across the whole top of my brain that he says shouldn't be there. It's hard to go for 9 months trying not to think about if I have it or not. Thanks!!

Re: negative spinal

Thats a big problem that I have "trying not to think about it". My MS right now is mild and I know that it will progress and the future - so I really want to enjoy everything I can right now - if this makes sense. . .I guess keep a journal about your symptoms and cross your fingers. I hope this all works out for you.

stay in touch

Re: negative spinal

Hi I also had a neg spinal tap but an abnormal mri. My neuro told me I should have another mri in 1 year. I am having some symptoms mostly tingling in legs and numbness in face with some headburning. Also very fatigued. I cant help wondering if waiting a year is too long and should be on meds now...Its all so scary

Re: negative spinal

I had a negative spinal tap but my mri showed 3 "spots" - I was told the same thing, that the spots did not look "ms" like - but, I've had 2 bouts with Optic Neuritis, and most recently am having tingling and numbing in my hands - also, the fatigue is horrible not to mention how dizzy I feel most of the time - Since I did not care for my last Neurologist I am going next week to see a new one - to repeat my mri since it has been a year and a half since my last one. Hang in there - I know it is so hard to do - but we're here for ya.

Re: negative spinal

Dear Jay,
I was so thrilled when my spinal tap came out "negative" for M.S., but damn it all, I still have M.S...it is the M.R.I., and of course the crazy symptoms, that tell the tale. There was even more confusion because I had Lyme Disease, but again it was M.S., M.S., M.S. and I think I am only now accepting that fact. Listen, everyone here is right about getting on meds. My neurologist wasted no time...his reasoning was that the benefits are so high for M.S., that even if it multiple sclerosis, the side effects of the injectables are minimum. So either way, starting drug therapy now sounds reasonable.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm torn between wanting a break form thinking about it and wanting answers. It's so interesting to see the differences and similarities in everyones symptoms. Thanks for being there!!!!

Re: negative spinal

Hey Jaycasa1231
I am completely in the same boat as you are I was diagnosed in nOvember of 04 and they did an MRi because I had Optic Neuritis and the MRI showed 4 lesions on the brain and my doctor told me that I had ms. Well then a couple days after Christmas I lost feeling in my left hand and I couldnt use it at all. I had to go to the hospital for 4 days for steriod treatment and well while i was there he ran a bunch more tests and a spinal and a another mri on my brain and spine none on my spine but now 5 on my brain. Dont know what the results are for my spinal yet but when i asked him if he was going to put me on meds yet he said that he was going to wait. I dont get it why wait I have had two attacks in 3 mos. what else does he want?
I feel with you and understand the frustration I go back on March 7 and he better.
Thinking of you
Angie

Re: negative spinal

Angie - I would suggest going for a second opinion as soon as possible. March seems like such a long time to wait when you have had 2 major attacks already. The National MS Society advocates starting meds as soon as possible, "Initiation of therapy with an immunomodulator is advised as soon as possible following a definite diagnosis of MS with a relapsing course". "Two Basic Signs are Required to Confirm MS; 1.Signs of disease in different parts of the nervous system 2.Signs of at least two separate flare-ups (also called relapses or exacerbations) of the disease." Best wishes for better health.
