starting injections tonight... scared!! - Multiple Sclerosis Message Board

The nurse is coming out to my house tonight to show my husband and I how to inject the capaxone. I hate knowing that this is (could be) the start of something I have to do for the rest of my life (i am only 29). How bad does the injection hurt - any tips that might make it easier?

Jenny, I know how you feel. I am on Avonex and it hasn't really sunk in yet. It will be a year in October that I've been injecting myself. Every Sat night, it still doesn't seem real. I guess until they come up with something else, it is something we have to accept. My shots must be working though because I just had a follow up MRI and it showed remarked improvement. I guess the lesions are looking "better" (?). I'll know better when I have my appt in Dec. But if the shots are slowing down the progression even a little bit, it is worth it. As far as hurting, my intramuscular shot doesn't hurt much. It did the one time and I think my muscle was tensed. It gives me a sense of control though, to give myself the shot. We are taking action against this stupid disease, remember that! Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Don't be scared! (easier said than done I know!)
You just have to remember to relax when doing the jab! I'll be honest, for the first week when I started taking copaxone the jabs did sting, but the more you do them the less it hurts! It's got to the point now where I can inject and not feel a thing, and thats just after 3 months of the daily jabs! The gel pack does help if its cold (be careful it doesn't split though, it goes everywhere if it does!)

Not a big deal. Only thing is I don't jab it in, I set it on my leg then press it in. I couldn't make the mental leap of swinging the darn thing toward my leg.

Don't be scared, I know easy to say, the injections are not a big deal.

My name is jennifer too, and I was diagnosed at 25. I'm now 32 and perfectly fine!!! I was on copaxone for several years and I'm TERRIFIED of needles!!! The only reason I could do it was because of the automatic injector they provide. The first few weeks of the shot,to be honest,was difficult. The medication burned for about 10 minutes, but then all was well. After a while...it didn't hurt at all. It's not really the needle as much as the drug itself. Now...It's no big deal, and I NEVER thought I would say that!!! Some people tell you that it's really easy, but it's not. It's the hardest thing in the world to do. Especially when your in your 20's.
