Avonex shots- Hurts in my right thigh - Multiple Sclerosis Message Board

It seems each 4th week when I have to inject in the side of my right thigh, it hurts. I know it as soon as it goes in. Any suggestions? I don't mind the shot in the other 3 places.
I've been on Avonex for about a year now and I still get side effects. Anyone else? Will they ever go away?

The side effects will come and go. You can go for months with no effects, and they will return again! I have been on Avonex 1 yr and 7 mos. and after no side effects last week, I am experiencing them today. Advil seems to knock them out.

As for the injection site issue...I never have injected in the side of my thigh.The only place I have ever injected is in the tops of my thighs. You might try icing the area before your next injection to help relieve the pain as the needle goes in...

me too it always hurts

But my mother, who was there when I learned to give myself the shot reminded me that I should rub the area where I am going to inject and then it won't hurt so bad and it works, oh and I ice the spot for 20 minutes

Hi JulieDe,
How about just using the tops of the thighs from now on? Just switch legs but keep away from the sides.
As far as side effects go, I think they could very well go away. I've been injecting Avonex for years and years and don't have any side effects at all. I did have side effects early on but they did gradually diminish (with some good and bad weeks along the way) and finally go away.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Maybe I will try to just inject on the tops of my thighs. I've never tried icing either, maybe I'll try that too.
