Unhappy Leg Pain (EMG Normal) & word substitution issues

Hello again ,

I have been continuing to have a burning sensation across my lower back and down my right leg, ankle that most recently has started to also include my first 2 toes. This is the newest nerve related issue and it has been going on for about 5 or 6 weeks. The pain first started in the low back and then continued to progress over the weeks to now include the toes. Neuro did an EMG today and stated that there was no indication of nerve damage. So... he changed the dose of nortriptyline (generic for pamelor) that he wants me to take at bedtime from 50 mg to 75 mg. The nortriptyline has seemed to help the sensations that I had on the right side of my face that occured for 18 mo. and also helped the recurrent right arm nerve issues. He had indicated that if there showed to be a nerve being pinched on the EMG that he would order an MRI of the area, But, he didn't find any nerve damage so no spinal MRI was scheduled.

I have a number of symptoms but no diagnosis. The 2 MRIs that I have had of my brain show no lesions. Two CAT scans have been normal. But the nerve pain seems to move around to different areas all on the right side of my body.

My most recent troubling issue is that I have started to substitue words when I am talking and only realize it when I see the "what are you talking about" look on the other person's face. Examples: referring to the Geek Squad service at Best Buy but saying Geek Squad at "Home Depot" (2 x in the same conversation), asking a relative to load the "garbage disposal" instead of the dish washer. I was out at dinner with a group of people from work and said that I would be out of the office on Monday beacause I had an all day meeting with "XXX" (saying the acronym) which as community organization I work with - when they looked at me funny I tried to correct what I said and stated the full name of the same organization. What I was trying to say was that I had an all day meeting with the X & X department I work for. There are other examples of this and they are starting to make me nervous. I do quite a bit of public speaking in my job and worry that I will say something wrong and embarass myself and the company. I haven't mentioned this to the neurologist yet in part because I am afraid he will think I am making it up. One more thing that he can test me for that will come back normal.

As I said before - the symptoms keeping showing up and all of the tests keep coming back normal. I SURE do not feel like everthing is nomal.

I am almost two years into the testing of unusual symptoms and in that time I have been diagnosed with hypertension (now on inderal la) and hyperthyroidism (radioactive iodine treatment to wipe out my thyroid 4/05 - taking levoxyl to replace my thyroid hormone). BUT...they can't figure out what is causing the right side of my body to continue to have nerve issues. I do not have a MS dx but so much of what I read here seems to relate to what I have been going through.

Thanks for letting me vent!

Sherry

Boy, can I relate to this. I too do public speaking and I'm also afraid of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.

I've been going through the dx process for a year, and find it hard to explain to people, why I do/say certain things. PCP just says to tell them "I've got a virus". A virus that makes you say the wrong thing, slur your words, or stammer? Right, and my dog just ate my homework.

Hang in there, Sher. Keep searching for answers.

Lisa
