I have only been having symptoms since early March (tingling arms, feet. Cold feet. tingling face. urinary hesitancy). I supposed I was just having a pinched nerve in my neck, but my doctor has said that is not the cause.
My GP has set up a nerve conduction test with a neuro on Thursday and I am wondering if that test is painful.
Hi Sara! Don't get too concerned about the nerve conduction tests. I've had worse. At most you may be a little uncomfortable. Kinda like hitting your funny bone in your elbow for a second but it doesn't linger. It is not the most fun test in the world, but it really isn't bad. It will be over before you know it. Hope you get some answers soon. Take care - Sharon Grace
I just had the EMG and the NCS done a couple of months ago. The EMG (which involves the mild electric shocks) isn't really painful, but slightly disconcerting. It was just kinda' wierd- that's all. The nerve conduction study was easy. I thought the needles would hurt, but they're thinner than a straight pin. My neuro. just poked me in about 6 spots in less than one minute. I couldn't believe that part was so easy. That was the one I was worried about and it turned out that the EMG was worse than the NCS!
I just had this done not even a week ago! Not bad. I'm not needle phobic though. The shocking part is nothing. It is weird cuz your arm/leg will jerk. The more you relax your body the less the shock. The lady doing it told me that and she was right. I was kinda laughing thru it cuz of my arm/leg/hand jerking. Then the neuro came in to do the needle. I must admit I started sweating before he started. But it was really nothing. The first poke was the worst only because I didn't know what to expect. After that it was nothing. The one poke that the neuro said was the worst wasn't!!!! I was just relieved when he told me everything looked pretty good. I promise you'll be okay. I thought it was easier than having the MRI. I'll take a needle over being put in a little tube anytime! lol
I have to agree with everyone here so far. The EMG/NCV isn't that bad at all. I tend to get pretty nervous about tests because they are the unknown, but this one really went well. I had my wife with me, and we joked through the whole thing, especially when the EMG equipment picked up a radio station while she was doing the test. LOL. You might feel a tiny bit of discomfort here and there, but it's quick and it's not bad. You take care and let us know how it turns out, okay?
I am having the emg/ncs test next Wednesday, June 4th. I will inform others on it after I'm done. I've been through alot with needles and painful lasers so I think I'll survive this. I mean I went through 13 tattoos and tried to do a laser treatment on those but that was so painful and it make me sick I said forget it. (Beware of laser tattoo removal, it's horribly painful and it can make you sick). Told my boyfriend either take it as it is (my 13 tattoos) or FORGET IT. Sorry, I drifted off the subject of what I'm here for. Anyway, from what you all say it's not to bad on the emg/ncs test. Thanks for the info on here.
josigirl, now that is really weird, cuz I had Nerve tests done and had absolutely no pain- but I also have had laser tatoo removal (so has my husband) in Philly- no less (okay, New Hope) and have never felt a thing! I didnt think my tattoos hurt, either though....
good luck, keep us posted...
I haven't had the nerve conduction test yet, but I'm not really worried about it. The tattoos were not painful it was trying to get them removed which was horribly painful but I didn't end up going through with it because I became very sick from the process. Anyway thanks for the feedback I do appreciate it. Josi
I had the emg and ncs this morning and its not bad at all. First she did the ncs test and its little shocks. The emg test is little fine needles that are nothing to worry about, just like little pinches. The emg test is a lot faster than the ncs test. So relax and don't worry about these tests.
