Question Had my nerve conduction tests - Question

I had two types of nerve conduction tests today - the first with electrodes on my arm/hand and then leg and foot. Second test with needles (that was fun.) The neurologist doing the test said that I did not have peripheral neuropathy or radiculopathy, and that the results were "relatively normal."
Does this mean that I don't have MS either?

He did not mention MS, but said that I should follow up with my primary care physician.

I have heard that any demylenation would show up on the nerve conduction tests - is that right?

The tests really exacerbated my symptoms, although the doc denied that it could happen!!!

Thanks for any insight.

Re: Had my nerve conduction tests - Question

I had a "better than average" series of evoked potentials, but my MRIs, symptoms, LP and lack of any other explanation resulted in a dx of MS. Unfortunately it can be a long journey to diagnosis...

Re: Had my nerve conduction tests - Question

My nerve tests came back normal too. My primary symptom was muscle weakness, not the tingling/numbness/neuropathy that a lot of people get. So the test probably doesn't rule out MS. It's good to see a couple different people though, each neurologist will look at it differently.

Re: Had my nerve conduction tests - Question

I just had a deep muscle and nerve EMG/NCS and I have had 2 standard EMG/NCS in the past year.NCS are used to see if a person has a neuropathy(some with MS have after the myelin is worn down)or a radiculopathy associated with MS but more in common with herniated disk or spinal impingement.EMG part is done to see if there is any muscle damage or disease is occuring like myopathy or ALS.
These test are subjective and sometimes getting a second opinion is good.If the Neurologist is stating no neuropathy thats great its extremely painful and managed by meds.I have radiculopathy a form of neuropathy,it is not uncommon for a person with MS to have radicular pain, but I have had 2 lumbar surgeries in the past.I have thoracic radiculopathy.
After I had the last EMG,my symptoms flaired up.The test may or may not cause the flair up, the stress thru the test sure can.
Hang in there, thats great the test is negative,I know it gets discouraging when test come back negative time after time.MS likes to play hide and seek,it will show up sooner than later if you have MS.I am not dx yet, just 99 % probable.Take one day at a time .MS is a process of elimanation.

prayers to you
Toni
