Optic Neuritis with Normal VEP?

Hi -

I am newly diagnosed, and had ON for the first time last month. I had IV SoluMedrol for three days, with the oral taper. Five weeks later, I am still experiencing color blindness off and on in my right eye, along with blurring. I had a VEP this past week and the tech let me see the results. Looks like the left eye was a little abnormal, but the right eye was almost totally normal???? Anyone know what this means? I totally expected this test to be abnormal, since my eye is still so out of whack.

Thanks!
Tammy

Re: Optic Neuritis with Normal VEP?

Tammy,

I had a vep and a ssep on Tuesday still waiting for results.I have severe eye pain both eyes with blurriness and have had episodes of double vision usually associated with heat. For the color black and dark greens turn to grey and pinks look peach.
When doing the vep the tech stopped after a half hour and started asking other questions about numbness, weakness, tingling, fatique and bladder .My question is this routine?Really curious about the the results.I see the eye DR tomorrow ,my vision has increasing has gotten worse over the last month.Wish I could answer your question.

Re: Optic Neuritis with Normal VEP?

Yep,

I have the same symptoms (except color blindness because I was born color blind) and yet, no ON.

Doctor can only attribute my occasional blurriness to the location of my lesions in my occipital lobe.

Recently, I am guaranteed to lose my vision (about 50%) in my R eye only after 1 beer. So, since I had a beer at lunch, I am now sitting here with my R eye closed for the past 3 hours. Wearing an eye patch (instead of forcing my eye closed) helps a lot and usually clears up in 1 hour, but I am too lazy to go find it and put it on. LOL

Re: Optic Neuritis with Normal VEP?

Eye dr dx me w/ on & said i missed 10 out of 14 on the color blindness test. they did a field of vision test and said i had a major blind spot in my right eye and a small one in my left. went to neuro and he acted unconcerned about it all but did an ep anyway which took about 15 min for both eyes and he said the results were borderline whatever that means and insisted that it was not on and that he was not going to rule out ms but that he felt certan that it was just migraines. he is scheduleing me for another mri of my spine on thurs and uped my neurotin & klonopin and sent me on my way. I'm confused about the ep test what is borderline? he said something about 100 & me being 104 or something. how bad do you have to be before someone starts listening to you. my eye dr. called 2x fri 1x sat and 1x today to check on me. he thinks in so many words that my neuro is a quack. what do i do. He just won't beleive that all of my sx are related to any thing other than the migraines.
Help anyone!!!!!

Re: Optic Neuritis with Normal VEP?

Agravy,

Can you switch Neurologist? It might be time to seek an MS specialist.
Call your neuro's office and get your VEP results on paper.P100 is normal anything above is abnormal. What the P stands for I don't know.At least he isn't ruling out MS.Its good that he is doing a MRI.I'm still waiting for specialist to call me for results on VEP and SSEP.She said it would be a week for her to get the results to me.I wish she would of done the test her self, but at the Cleveland Clinic they have techs that do them. After they done the veps ,the tech ask if I had numbness and tingling,I thought was odd, maybe it was protacol.I hate being in limbo land.
