little red pin size dots on skin

Hi everyone,
I know I read somewhere on this site about getting littler red pin size dots on the skin.. Is that a sign of ms or just an autoimmune illness?? I have them alot but they arent in rash form.. they are usually on arms, legs. and my chest, They are very tiny and flat, they dont hurt and go away rather quickly, I've been getting them for quite some time, never mentioned to my doctor because i never really knew what they were. But I read about them somewhere on this board. If anyone has info on them could you let me know. Thanks, Tiffany

Re: little red pin size dots on skin

Tiffany,

Petechiea is the name of the little red dots.

They can be auto-immune related not a marker for MS.Petechiea can be seen in rhematoid (sp) arthritis, vasculitis, scladerma(sp)

A blood test should be done to check your platlet count, could be a sign for leukemia.

It is common to see this in B-12 deficiency or low folic acid.
They are seen with pregnancy

Contact your DR and have him run a simple blood test, usually they are idiopathic-unknown orgin

I never knew it could be autoimmune. I have little red dots all over my body. Mostly on arms and legs. I noticed as my MS symptons got worse so did the dots. I should ask the nero about this. I had my blood tested for all sorts of things including B12. All were picture perfect.

Re: little red pin size dots on skin

Isn't petechiea broken blood vessels? About a year ago I took my son to the doctors because he had them on his face, around his eyes. His pediatrician said it could have been from crying alot... he had recently started the overnight visits at his grandmothers house which didn't go smoothly at first.

I didn't know this was a sign of a more serious problem?

Re: little red pin size dots on skin

Curious11,

Yes they are broken tiny little blood vessels and can be caused by crying and laughing in the face and can be caused by chronic coughing on the front of the chest. As you age they become common. But can be the cause of other diseases.they are seen in several auto-immune diseases but not specific for a peticular(sp) disease.

Hi everyone. I do have a few questions. Petechiea are small red dots that can appear anywhere on the body. Does anyone take anytype of medication that thins out the blood? example: tylenol, plavix, coumadin, asprin? If so, this could also be the cuase. In any case you should let you primary know as soon as possible, because there are other conditions that can cause petechiea such as vascular insuficiency. Hope this helps.

Re: little red pin size dots on skin

Hi everyone, thanks for all the help! All my bloodwork was normal, my platlet count is normal so was my b12 levels... but I do take alot of ibuprophen and asprin and sometimes even alieve, I hurt so bad all the time and since the doctor hasnt given me any perscription meds i have to take otc's and maybe im taking too much! I never thought about that, and I guess switching the ots' around is probably worse then sticking to just one type, i just thought if i mixed them up then i wouldnt get used to one and it stop working,, not that they really help for pain all that well anyway.. but thanks again, im gonna try stopping the otc's for alittle and see if the red dots go away!

Re: little red pin size dots on skin

I have friend a work that has the little red dots. She has been diagnoised with a vascular auto-immune disease. She goes to a specialist on the East coast of Florida. She doesn't have many problems. She just listens to her body and slows down when necessary. I will get the name of her disease and the name of her specialist and get back to you.

My friend that has the little red pin size dots has been diagnosed with HSP Vasculitis. She was diagnosed at Cleveland Clinic in Weston, FL. The doctor that specializes in this disease is now at University of Miami. The John Hopkins website has some information on this disease.

Re: little red pin size dots on skin

Is Petechiea harmful or deadly in any way? I'm 16 and I've had them for quite sometime. I also have these two on my left hand, the bigger one it sort of pokes where I can feel it a little bit. It doesn't hurt at all or anything, I also get the red dots above my left eye, very very few on my chest, and some on my arms and legs.

Hi, Eliza. You revived a thread that's over 2 years old and I actually only see one name that's even familiar to me. Just in case someone here on the MS board doesn't have an answer for you, I suggest that you also post your question on both the Skin Problemsand also the general Immune Disorder boards. I hope you get your answer -- and also, that you've been to a dermatologist! Good luck to you.

Hi Cleacat - have you been tested for Lyme disease? I keep seeing you posting questions on symptoms that I search for that go with Lyme disease... just curious - especially the eye floaters, neck pain you describe. Hope you are well none the less.
