Something my PT said to me......

OK, so my PT was here to work on the strength of my left side the other day. He said something so bizarre that I was in shock. He asked if anyone else in my family has or had MS. I said nope, but we're full of Auto-immune things, like Rhuemy and Lupus and Chrones and stuff like that. He said No, no, no those aren't like MS!!! I said what? Uh, yes they are, they are all Auto-immune related just like MS. He said no MS is a disease of the nervous system, where the mylien attacks the nerves. Well duh!! I said, yeah I know that, but it's also an Auto-immune disorder as well. He said no, it's really not, and then said to me "you should look it up on the internet"!!! OK, Now, I live with this stink disease everystinkinday. AND I have been on the internet since the day of dx. AND I've talked to my MS Specialist and my Family doctor about MS both of whom have said it is both nervous system AND Auto-immune. And now comes my PT telling me to look it up on the internet????

Um, is there something I've missed on the MS boat?

Re: Something my PT said to me......

Apparently there's still debate in the scientific community as to whether MS is autoimmune or not. I had a talk with my neurologist about it... he's really quite an exceptional doctor... a phd and a neurosurgeon. The verdict is that nobody really knows what causes the demyelination for sure-- whether it's infectious in nature or autoimmune or whatever.

Steroids just help with the swelling.

The medical community is really in the dark ages with this one. They don't even know why a lot of the medications prescribed actually work-- i.e minocycline. At the moment, they seem very interested in EBV-- the virus that causes mono, although this may be just another red herring.

That's why I'm willing to try the Lyme disease medicine. Who knows? It could be bacterial? Lyme antibiotics can actually enter the CNS and kill bacterial cysts... unlike usual oral medications. I'll let you guys know if it works. It probably won't, but it's worth a try at least.

Still haven't been diagnosed.

Re: Something my PT said to me......

My mom has Lupus, I had MONO, and now I have MS, and if someone ever talked to me about what exactly MS is, and came back with the answer that your PT gave, I would say to them, walk a [frankenstein] mile in my shoes, experience the fatigue, and the numbness, and taking the shots, then tell me what MS isn't

I guess he was just trying to sound like a medical person, but I think he missed the boat, and telling you to look it up on the internet is that where he got his MS info?
