can my general practioner read my mri? - Multiple Sclerosis Message Board

I am going to have my doctor order and mri.....will she be able to tell if their is an abnormality then refer me to a neurologist? Will the people who take the mri look at it and if their is something wrong-write it on the mri?With all the other symptons I have had-yesterday my left hand hurt very bad all day and this morning my lips and fingertips were half numb.....thanks....

After an MRI, a Radiologist reads it and sends a report to the doctor who ordered it. If you don't know, a radiologist is a doctor who just reads all kinds of X-rays, including MRI's, CT scans, and ultra-sounds. If they find something on your MRI, your doc should refer you to a neurologist. Some neuro's like to look at the MRI's themselves since they were trained to do that.

Thank u so much....I am going to get an mri done soon....these symptons have just come on so hard and pretty fast....but when I was a child,a few times a year,when I would turn my neck a certain way it was agonizing--worse pain ever and as a young adult I had a few zaps that were unbelievable...but I dunno....

I would recommend that you always, always have a neurologist read your MRI as they are specifically trained to do so. A general practicioner may not even be sure how to read the notes and may not be sure what additional questions need to be addressed from the results.

Let me know what happens.
