I've recently changed to Copaxone after 10+ years on Betaseron.
I have a 6mos supply of Betaseron, 3mos to expire Sept 07 and 3mos to espire Nov 07 which I no longer need.
I would love to donate to someone in need but my local MS Society said they can't take it, neither can my neurologist's office or the nearest hospital.
I can't believe I have to destroy unopened medication worth well more than $6000.00!
Any suggestions on how I might get it to someone on Betaseron in need?
Thanks.
(Nice to find this site. This is my first post but I'm sure I'll be here often now.)
Hi, cyberpj from Planet Earth! That is so nice of you to go the extra mile to see if you can help someone in need! Would it possibly help to call the manufacturer?
Good thought. I must admit I'm cynical about corporations and preferred to give it to someone I felt sure wouldn't just resell it. Guess I'll give Berlex a call to see what they say.
When so many said they couldn't legally accept it, I also decided against a local classified ad in case this is actually illegal! But I just know there are people out there struggling to pay to be on this med who could really use a 6 mos. supply.
Totally understand your thoughts on that but since most of the manufacturers have drug assistance programs they might approach it differently. That said, not going to be surprised if you're going to have to wind up throwing it out and yes, it is a shame.
I'm certain you did the right thing by not putting an ad in the paper though!
my dad used to have parkinsons and he would switch medication often. He belonged to a couple support groups and they would often trade or give away medicine in these situations.
I DO believe it is illegal to even give away this medication to anyone; however it is an excellent idea to call the manufacturer. I wouldnt be surprised if they tell you that you have to destroy to it either, but its worth a try. Nice of you to think about it from a charitable point of view though. If you are getting this thru your insurance company, you might give them a call and see what they say. Legally though, Im pretty sure you cant "switch" it around amongst friends, support group members or even donate it. There were other posts on this a few weeks back, try searching on this board, someone might have found out the exact answer. I seem to remember this question coming up before, but cant for the life of me remember the answer given..
Good luck and its nice to know humanity still exists!
