Back pain with MS?

I am currently being evaluated for MS and will be seeing an MS specialist soon, but I was wondering if anyone has back pain with their MS? Each time I stand at the sink to wash dishes, my back starts to hurt so bad until I get done and then the pain subsides.

Thanks!

Lynn

Re: Back pain with MS?

I get alot of upper shoulder pain when I have very long days...it used to drive me nuts all the time, now its just sometimes. I think, honestly, that this has alot to do with my MS....it comes and goes..and sometimes, when my husband thinks he is helping me, rubbing my shoulders, he is actually putting me thru the roof with pain!
I think its both muscle spasms along with the nerve damage that is taking place for me...but I have heard of pains in the back from others...
Try Aleve. It works for up to 12 hours and works on ALL my MS stuff, including my pre-shot OTC pill! (I take it before every Rebif shot and NEVER get side effects)

Re: Back pain with MS?

That's good to know! I get pain in my mid to lower back. There are times when it hurts to touch certain parts of my body...no reason, just sore to the touch.

Yes, from time to time, I also get lower back pain. It comes and goes. It can be very painful at times. I take a pain pill when I can no longer tolerate it. Take care.

Re: Back pain with MS?

Lynn, this is so good kinda to know that someone is going through similiar things as myself, mine has always been tender to the touch also, and thats why they have done Mri, bone scan exrays, ect. in the past and no findings, and yes standing when i feel up to it ,doing dishes it kills, or if i have bent to much the day before, i am slowly learning triggiers to this so i can avoid what makes it worse. I have had a couple good day, still numbness but it's not as bad and alot of pain has subsided along with the rubber band feeling, creepy crawly, ! Maybe we can stick together and help eachother through this as noone seems to understand except my board buddies!
Love, Monkey

Re: Back pain with MS?

My whole back hurts,, from the shoulders clear down my spine, and the sacrum is the worst! I see a pain specialist and that helps some but not 100% I use flexall and ice packs and see a massage therapist and my hubby massages me on weekends.

Re: Back pain with MS?

My left hip has pain with the result that I have a limp and tend to sleep on my right side. I have lower back pain too but I think it's a byproduct of favoring one hip.

If I use Flexoril, I sleep for 24 hours, I already have muscle weakness and the flexoril seems to cause it to be exagerated! I also have back pain, and I take Darvocet for it seems to help some, does not take the pain away 100% but it takes the edge off it, so I can function. I've learned to take one right before bedtime, so when I get up I can move..otherwise I have a lot of pain from laying still all night long.
I continue to have numbness in both my feet and legs and this morning when I went to bed, I noticed a tremor (for lack of better words) of weakness in my left knee, that is new.....It was not constant but I felt it....this concerns me, I cant get into my Neuro until Nov. 6th, Thought maybe I'd go into my primary care Doc, and see what he thinks.
Later,
Janet

Re: Back pain with MS?

Lynn, it's definitely possible but it's hard to say for sure and especially if it's troublesome, mention it to your doctor. It's easy to dismiss everything as being MS related but it also can be a mistake to do that!

That said, I have an "impaired signal" on my t-spine. I THINK that is radiology spine talk for lesion but I haven't seen the MS Specialist yet to go over the films and report. However, the "clinical impression" on the radiology report was "Multiple Sclerosis, Back Pain".
