Hi all. Ive been on a pretty good regimen of supplements, including lots of oils; omegas. Fish oil, flaxseed oil, Evening Primrose Oil...not to mention all the calcium, D and Tumeric I take.
Im also on Rebif.
I get blood work done monthly, and for the past 4 months, my Triglyercerides have been climbing! They are so high over the normal mark now that my doctor is screaming at me that he is going to have to change SOMETHING, even if it is my Rebif.
My sugars/liver functions/red and white Blood cells and cholesterol are ALL PERFECT! This tells me either its the Rebif or the supplements which are making my fat cells go nuts! Since Im very tiny and have no body fat, this is dangerous. I have to get the levels down.
Do any of you know how much Omegas and supplements can interract with your bodys trigylceride levels? I really need to figure out if I should stop them completely, or simply cut them down signifcantly (and how low can you go?).
You can double-check this but I believe that Omega 3s are actually recommended to REDUCE triglycerides. I have always heard that the culprits are saturated and hydrogenated fats, not enough fiber and too much sugar (of course, this would include refined white flour products).
I know you said your liver was okay but don't high triglycerides effect it? I know that high triglycerides can also be reason to test for Diabetes -- have they suggested a glucose tolerance test or do they feel sure it's something you're taking that you need to stop?
Hi Bearygood. Actually, you are right. Omega 3s are supposed to be good for Triglycerides. I did verify that.
As for my liver and glucose. I have both functions done every quarter. According to my recent labs, and every other set of labs Ive had this year, they are in very normal ranges. Ive done them both while fasting- had basic glucose tests regularly and even stick myself with a glucose monitor now and then, so far, my sugars are fine. My liver enzymes are exactly where they should be...my cholesterol is actually low overall....this is strangely confusing!
My eating habits are actually reallly good. Other than the occaisional splurge on a pizza or burger (were talking monthly, not weekly), I cook everything I eat. I eat no red meat, beyond Buffalo, which is low fat, no cholesterol. Ive stuck with all whole wheat breads and pastas.. but sorry, could do the gluten free thing! I eat a ton of chicken and turkey, fish at least once a week and usually Salmon for the Omegas- I eat salad daily, fruit daily, probably more than the recommended servings, but since I crunch on carrots and celery all day long I have no idea how much Im really eating- but its good, I promise.
Rebif. Might be the culprit. Its possible that it isnt allowing my body to clearly elminiate the fat in my cells....I cant get a straight answer on this, and have a call into my PCP about it now. The problem is the Neuro thinks is supplements, and wants me off them (not happening, at least not all of them) and the PCP knows NOTHING about MS Drugs...so until the two of them have a meeting of the minds, Im in a bind. IM actually scared. To have my triglyercides THIS high, cant be healthy...
Thanks for your feedback. You are compeltely right about the omegas..but that being the case, and me taking so many- what the heck is going on here? I can only imagine how high they would be if I didnt take the supplements!
I unfortunately don't have an answer for you about triglycerides and the affects supplements and meds have on it, but I do have a question for anyone who can answer it.
I am wondering about the dose some take for their supplements especially Vitamin D.
I'm interested in any answers even what their full supplement regimen is including doses if they don't mind sharing.
Hey there Nikki,
I'm starting to think i had better book in a new set of bloods,. I actually haven't had a blood test in a while. Ahhhh ok 4 months actually. Good time to check my levels eh?? I take a few supplememnts too.
I take Vit D tablet daily. Here in Aust we've had a really cold winter hardly any sun at all. My blood test showed my very low Vit D deficiency. My Doc actually told me to go to a Solarium for me to absorb Vit D easily, for a while anyway.
But like i said in my posts. I'm due for blood tests again to check my levels, kidneys, liver etc...
Will do Bearygood, but wont even be calling until I return from my buiness trip next week....I have a feeling Im going to be needing my Neuro more than my PCP by that time. Im already exhausted just running around, preparing for the trip this weekend!
I will let you know what he says when I see him.
Depends on how you look at it. The expo is in Atlantic City, which would be fun, but Im working an expo booth for 12 hours a day, for 3 days in a row, by myself...by the time the expo ends at 8 pm, Ill be too tired to do much more than drag myself upstairs and prepare for the next day! This is the first time Im going away without hubby, so thats really stressful...my company is putting a ton of pressure on me to make sales at this thing....Im overwhelmed by the entire idea..
But, this is what I do best..sales and marketing..so Im giving it my best! Details when I get back! Thanks for caring..
Your trip away does sound tiring.. 12 hr days, gosh your going to be soooo exhusted. Expo's can be very hard work . Well i do hope you find some "me time" for yourself with out hubby and the kids. NJ / AC not surehow far you are from home, but i Hope your boss is putting you up in a fancy place.
Stat well. Good Luck with the trip.
Nikki... I looked up a few things (of course). Did they check your thyroid in the blood work? There were a few things pop up when I did my search indicating it could change the level... things like steroids, bc pills, water pills and thyroid could cause a change in triglyerceride levels.
I wonder if the Rebif or supplements have anything to do with it unless you have just changed the supplements in the last 4 months. You have been on the Rebif for a year and I wouldn't think there would be an issue all of a sudden.
I am sure you have probably thought of all of this... you're usually a step ahead of me... just some ideas.
I don't envy your expo work ahead. I used to go to those with my husband and it is exhausting. I will send lots of positive energy your way.
HI Lisa! Thanks for thinking of me, its very much appreciated! The supplements, actually are supposed to HELP my triglycerides, and Ive been on them about 3-4 months now, regularly...My doctor says the REBIF isnt hurting me, but i have to wonder. My triglyercide levels have been going up over the past year that Ive been on it. Ive been watching the levels closely with each quarterly lab Ive had done. I have to rule out bc pills, since Ive been on them for 20 years- dont take water pills, steroids are POSSIBLE, but Im not on them regularly and hadnt been on them the past quarter, although I have been on them twice this year....and my thyroid? According to the blood work done, thyroid is normal, however thats not a bad place to investigate further.
Im going away tomorrow, and will be back on Friday. Im going to make that appt with my PCP when I return and get him to do further investigation. No one seems to think triclycerides are a huge thing to worry about, but honestly, I am. They are just too far over the normal mark for me to let it go.
Thanks so much for caring. Its very reassuring to know people do care! Ill let you know what I find out!
and, Glamour Girl, hugs to you, too. I am being put up at one of the nicest Casinos in Atlantic City, simply because that is where the expo is being held. A/C is about 3.5 hours from home by car....too far to commute and not far enough to be considered a vacation for me! As for trying to get some Me-Time..Ill be happy just NOT having to cook and make beds and do laundry for a few days!
Once, I had my Triglyceride high, I did some exercise and it went down. Are you exercising? I myself hate to exercise and I know I should start again even if it is just for 20min a day.
I also take supplements like calcium and fish oil.
Have fun in Atlantic City, I am leaving to Europe next Sunday, my first trip with the medication, I bought today a small cooler to carry the syringes, and will see how I manage.
