what is considered durable medical equipment (DME)

Can anyone help me with what is considered DME? I know wheelchairs and walkers, but what about exercise equipment, physical therapy supplies? I can't seem to find anything on the net.

Thanks.

Re: what is considered durable medical equipment (DME)

DME depends on your Doctor. You might call Medicare or go online to the Medicare website. Power Chairs and Rehab equipment can be depending on your doctor's prescription. Check at www.medicare.gov They have a definition of DME online. If you have insurance other than Medicare, you might seek out DME from them. I was told by my Doctor that a Lap Pool could be paid for as a DME.

Wish I could get my insurance to pay for a lappool. I did look into it, especially since EVERY gym/healthclub/YMCA in the area keeps their pools at 84 degrees. Too hot for me to use! The lappools I looked into run anywhere from $8000 on up...my insurance, even with the doctors letter, will not approve a dime of it.
If there is a loophole on that, please share!

I do not know about insurance, but if you contact the manufacturer, they should be able to assist you. Much of it is based on your rehabilitation requirements.

Thank you! I have Blue Cross. I bet I could call and they could send me a list. I always know where to go first if I have a question.
