white spots have showed up on brain MRI is it multiple sclerosis

Hi I have had a weakness in my left arm, that has come and gone for acout 5 years. Recently I noticed that my leg on that side felt srtrange, almost like it is dead, but not numb. The doctor said the causes of these symptoms were thoraic outlet syndrome in my arm, and disc damage in my back that was causing the sensation in my leg. However the symptoms seemed to come on my arm and leg at exactly the same time and recently I have noticed that the left side of my head feels strange. Not numb, just strange, my eye also feels funny, like its strained and I have a blocked feeliing in my ear.

My doctor sent me for a MRI of the brain, which stated the while I did not have a brain tumor, some white spots did show up on the brain and they couldnt completley rule out MS. I am now waiting, but am worried sick as I have 3 small children. Do you think it is MS?

It is really hard to let you know. You will have the results very soon. Your symptoms are shared by many here. It is difficult to await results, but you need to relax and not worry. Any stress you self-inflict will only create unnecessary flare-ups if it is MS. MS is 99.99% non-fatal, if it is MS. Stay POSITIVE!!

ciara, like MSJayhawk said, it's impossible to know. I know that us saying "don't worry" won't make you NOT worry but please do know that MS is not the end of the world. Chances are that like many of us (certainly me), if you have reason to learn more about it, you might find that what you thought you knew about MS was wrong.

Let us know if you have any questions and please keep us posted. Good luck!

I just don't know but I know it is scary. I assume your Dr. ruled out mini strokes. I had symptoms of strokes before I had a real stroke. If it is on both sides of your body than it isn't a stroke. It is very difficult to tell the difference between a stroke and MS. How is your blood pressure. If you are having a stroke the blood pressure gets high. I also have the Disc damage in my back. I found out which was which by going to a MS specialist.

Re: white spots have showed up on brain MRI is it multiple sclerosis

I want to add, too, that usually, reports do not uses the word white spots- so are you seeing white spots on your MRI, or did your doctor use that term? White spots, always show up on MRIs, and like dogsbestfriend stated, they do not always mean MS....lesions, which are white spots on the MRI, can come from migranes, previous head trauma, brain infections, and many other things....if you have the report, look for terms like demylination, thats the myelin sheath, which is being damaged- a major sign of MS...look for the contrast (if you had contrast when they did your MRI) and see what it says shows upon contrast.. and if you havent let your doctor explain this to you yet, dont panic!!!! Most people look at their reports and their films, and freak out...its not a good idea. And, the radiologist who read the report is not the person who is going to give you the diagnosis anyway...they dont always know exactly what it is they are seeing, its their job to point out what they see, so that the Neuro or MS specialist, can interpret it...

Like everyone else said, MS is liveable- its manageable even. You have nothing to fear except your own mind! Stress and worrying can really make things worse- so do your best to hang tight until you see your doctor. Honestly, the not knowing is much harder then the disease.
