Dx and I am going nuts

I was told a couple years ago I had a spine cyst. It is clearly there on the MRI. My back is basically dissolving, but that is another board..... I just went through exhaustive MRIs of my brain today to see if I had any other lesions (I already have one) on my brain. This also came up 2 years ago. Aside from all of my health issues--arthritis, ddd, thyroid cyst, hashimotos, nerve pain, paralysis of my limbs off and on, etc, etc, etc......my question is this--Would the spine cyst be considered a lesion and if so then would the combo of the one in the brain and one on the spine with all my symptoms be considered MS?? Reason I ask is that the McDonalds DX protocol says if I have 2 lesions along with symptoms then I have MS. The MRI today took 1 hours 50 minutes due to the electric going off while in the "tube"--can't even express how that freaked me out. It was done because of a new symptom--electric shocks in my tongue. I have been shocked around a dozen times in the last 2 months. I have been having all the various symptoms for over 10 years now and I want to know. Maybe I am just over the edge due to all the junk today. But I am tired of all of it. I looked at the films and see tiny little specks (9) now that were not on the films 2 yrs ago. I feel like I am going insane most of the time. I know I can't get an online dx, I just want to vent because I am hurting and confused and sick of it. Perhaps I should go to the depression board, yes? Oh my

Wow, that is a LOT to go through, and a big hug to you hun. Sounds like you've been suffering a long while with this. Electrical going out during the MRI? Not good!

Are you able to contact your doctor/specialist regarding the spine cyst? And to better explain the McDonald criteria? I know it's highly frustrating, but a trained eye is needed to answer both your concerns here. While many of us are familiar with the McDonald criteria, none of us are specialized in saying "yes, you fit it".

Electric shocks in the tongue do not sound pleasant. I've had my own share of tongue/mouth problems with burning mouth syndrome (suspected brain stem lesion the cause).

Since you only just received the MRI films today, I do hope that you are going to be seeing a neurologist that can look at them and go over the results with you further. Is this the case?

Re: Dx and I am going nuts

septemberwoman, unfortunately, even if we could SEE the MRIs no one here would be able to tell you -- but a cyst is different than a lesion. Did someone before misread the MRI? Who knows but it's not impossible!

What type of doctor are you seeing who ordered an MRI? (GP/PCP, MS specialist or regular neurologist). Is this the same doctor as the one you saw before? And does the facility have the OLD MRIs so that they can do a comparison?

Re: Dx and I am going nuts

MRIs were ordered by my Physiatrist (pain management and rehabilatation). I saw a Neuro 2 years ago. He just stated I didn't have MS, then goodbye. I SHOULD be seeing a Rhumy for my back, but all those people say Nothing we can do, Surgeons (neuro and ortho) say No way we will operate. Haven't see a MS Specialist. I am in an HMO and it took a month to get them to agree to the MRI. I do have my old films in the closet. This is what I used to compare. I do understand there is a difference betwein cysts and lesions but I am confused tonight. That happens a lot. A neuro is lined up to look at the films as well as the usual radiologist.
This tongue thing is the pits but thankfully it only last 5-10 seconds. I am SUPER duper sensitive to any spicy food--mild anything sets my mouth on fire. ( not connected to when the shocks happened though) Even black pepper sends me around and back. My Phyisatrist was alarmed when I told him about the tongue shocks and said that has to do with my 9th cranial nerve. So off to MRI land to see what is going on. I do have a large (egg size) thyroid cyst that is growing inside and to the back. Who knows maybe that set off the shocks.
I guess I will know in a couple weeks when my doctor gets back from vacation. Everyone in the food chain should have seen the films by then. As far as the pain I have, well I have been suffering from it since 1983 when I was 26 so I just trudge on!

Re: Dx and I am going nuts

That's a really long time in pain. You poor thing

Funny enough, food relieves the pain I experience from my burning mouth. No matter if it's mild or spicy. It's such an odd phenomenon/condition, so individualized. So many things can cause mouth pain, that it takes a lot of searching, ruling out, etc.

I just know mine's over the top today because I feel other MS symptoms flaring up too. Too much heat in the sun. I wanted to walk 5 blocks to meet my coworkers for dinner, but I tend to get chilly in indoor air conditioned places, so I wore a long sleeved cotton shirt. Probably was not a great idea. Now I'm suffering with head pains and pressure, mouth raging mad, numbness in hands, etc. I need a good night's sleep and I'll hopefully wake up fresh .

Re: Dx and I am going nuts

septemberwoman, so YOU have the old MRIs??? I strongly advise you to get them to the radiologist in the facility that did today's MRI so that they can do a comparison. Sometimes the comparison is a very telling part of the story! If they've already generated the report, they can do an addendum! (And make sure you get copies of not only the new MRI for yourself but also the report(s)!)

Re: Dx and I am going nuts

septemberwoman, just curious, where did you get your info on the McDonald Criteria? what you quoted is outdated- it takes more than 2 lesions...and Bearygood is very right in pointing out that cysts are NOT lesions- they are two different things...
Also with MS, the lesions which are there, need to be specific in area, size and diameter- so any good MS doc would be able to look at a film and tell you if they are at least in the right place.
Please go see a NEW and IMPROVED Neuro- it cant hurt..

good luck
Nikki
