I have been having a lot of troubles with symptoms sticking around. I was just wondering since symptoms with an attack can last days,weeks,months how do you know if they will be permanent or not? If you could clear this up for me please. Thanks

Hello, shelbycat.

If at about 3 years you have a symptom(s) that has never remitted then it is considered permanent.

Remission in MS is about not doing as bad as when you were having a relapse. That does not mean you won't deal with symptoms. You can have symptoms that come and go, remit completely or those that are permanent.

There are some with MS who have no symptoms in between relapses but, I haven't run accross too many like that.

Shelby, I just spoke to my MS doc about this..sort of. I have a symtom, numb, tingling hand- which was my onset symtom and has never gone away....he told me that after 2 years if it doesnt stop, its considered permanent. Not much different then what Snoopy told you, but slightly. My symptoms do not ever stop- ive never had a real day where they didnt bother me...however, other symtoms, things like ON, have come and gone completely.

This is my fear. That my burning mouth that my neuro is convinced is due to a brain stem lesion (my GP isn't so convinced) may never go away. It's by far my worst symptom that I experience, hands down.

I've had it for over a year, and I've read statistics that show burning mouth averages 7 years. Now the majority of those I've found with the condition are not MS sufferers (however, some are) so I wouldn't hold a candle to the 7 year statistic. It's such an unknown condition (what triggers it, etc).

I won't get down about it though. I have a little bit of hope that it will eventually go away, or at least be manageable without having to rely on drugs to control the pain.

well Im at 15 months with my shoulder pain and for the last three months it's also in my forearm and hands. It has been a constant problem 24/7 with very few days tollerable.

I guess I am at the half way point to permanent. I think my body needs to hurry up and fix this, because I don't like to play this game at all.LOL
