Very Frustrating !!!

Hey everyone, I am having a really tough time being patient with this whole process. I finally went to see a Neuroligist 2 weeks ago, I was not impressed at all... I spent a total of maybe 20 minutes in his office, after a 2 hour drive.
Anyway, he asked me what my symptoms were, so I told him about what was happening lately, and then he just said he really couldn't put them in any distinct category...ie. ALS, MS etc. So he did a really quick examination and said he didn't see anything wrong,(unfortunately I was having a pretty good day) and I think he was going to send me on my merry way, because he said I already had an MRI last June, so I really didn't need another one, so I said that my symptoms have changed and have gotten way worse since the last one. So he decided to send me for one anyway just because I wanted one, and would not do it with contrast because he said It didn't make any difference??? That's not what i have read on here( What do I know he is the doctor,Right?) Anyway, that is my rant for now, Hope I didn't wine too much I am just really tired off this whole thing...just like the rest of the people on here. I just want an answer! OH YEAH, I got my MRI appt. date today...Can you believe it. Feb/8/2009 Amazing, I will be calling the hospital on Monday to get put on a cancellation list, which means it can be anytime of the day or night, they run 24hours a day. I don;t care really I just don't want to wait that long...time is of the essence right.............Sorry for the downer mood, I just feel like screaming right now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bye for now ........Heather

Re: Very Frustrating !!!

Hi Heather, your story is one of the few times that I am grateful that I dont live in Canada. (most of the time I wish I did!). Thats a long time to wait, I hope you can get it moved up....and you were right to insist on an MRI again. They can change week to week! Depending on what is really going on, even without contrast it might pick up something- but if the lesions are too small, it might not.

Do you have the opportunity to see another Neuro? This one does sound alittle 'iffy". You really need to see one who is MS literate- an MS specialist would be nice, but not absolutely necessary. There are many good Neuros with many patients with MS, who are capable of at least knowing what tests to order and signs to look for.

My heart goes out to you..and this IS the place to rant- let it all out!
Hugs
nikki

Re: Very Frustrating !!!

Thanks Nikki, I do love living in Canada, but some things really need improvement, we need more doctor's in general and more medical equipment and technicians to operate them to cut down on these "Crazy" wait times. as far as getting another doctor, I was really lucky to get in with this guy so soon,(6weeks approx.) the other Neuro. my gp tried to send me to is booking into next September 2009!!! So what's a girl to do, I guess if I feel really super bad I will go to Emerg. maybe that will excellerate things? I was wondering one of my symptoms is left arm pain, weakness and achiness...but recently one morning I woke up and the middle finger on that same side was extremely stiff and hard to move, and is still that way. I told the doc. but he seemed to ignore it, he didn't even look at it? What more can I say???? Have a great night......Heather

Re: Very Frustrating !!!

Your frustration is indeed well-founded. If you can not get an MRI, wait until you have a flare-up and then check-in an emergency room and they will run a MRI. In 1982 my neurologist had me admitted in order to allow me to be poked and prodded in 3 days. In 2002 I was admitted through the emergency room by the neurologist who told the hospital to keep me until the MRIs were completed.

I hope you can find a more attentive neurologist who will be more proactive.

Unfortunately, this is not the case (in my experience) in Canada Jayhawk.

Indeed, the waiting lists for MRIs are quite lengthy for Canadians.

Re: Very Frustrating !!!

Hi Nenu, I see you are from New Brunswick, is it the same situation as what I have been experiencing in Ontario and what have you done to make sure you don't get lost between the cracks. ( If you don't mind me asking?). My husband and I drove through New Brunswick on our way to Nova Scotia a couple of years ago....Very Beautiful!!! Bye for now...Heather

Hey Heather! I'm from Ontario originally actually. I came here for University, and fell in LOVE with this area. So I stayed!

It's very much the same situation. The run around. I didn't have a family doctor when I was diagnosed, because I could not get one! Waiting lists, not enough doctors, too many patients... it's a sad state of affairs. This election, the one going for more funding to health care is getting my vote!

I had to be 110% proactive, and ask every specialist for an MRI when MS appeared on the radar, until finally my ENT (ear nose throat doctor) had the sense to send me (he suspected MS from the first time seeing me). Without him, who knows if I'd even have the diagnosis now?

Re: Very Frustrating !!!

Hi Heather;
This is my first day on the board and after reading your wait for an MRI, I wanted to drop a note. Not sure what area of Ontario you are in, but I too am in Ontario and have managed to get an MRI appointment in 2 weeks. A hospital in the area is currently doing them 24 hours a day to help accommodate the need. If you are relatively close it might be worth a try. The hospital is in the Greater Toronto Area if it is at all convenient for you. I can provide more details if you need....
I feel your frustration. I've been juggling this 'diagnosis ball' for approximately 8 years now! Someday, fingers crossed, they'll figure it out.
Long Health Care waits aside, Canada really is a fabulous place to live, don't you think?

Best of Luck!

Re: Very Frustrating !!!

Welcome! Yes, I wouldn't trade living in Canada for living elsewhere. Despite all else

I do have some good news the MRI Dept. called and they changed my appt. till Oct/14/08. That's definately more exceptable. I'll let you know how it goes!

Hi Heather..
You might like to consider having your B12 levels checked as it cause a lot of problems like your and mimics MS that is what I thought I had not to mention a whole heap of other terrible things.......
Serum B12 and the fpollowing 2 tests must be done uMMA & Homocysteine as these 2 will be elevated even if your B12 is in the normal although there are a lot of variables with the so called normal ranges......The best thing is it can be treated...Are your symptoms worse in stressful times? Also they can come and go if you are at times getting some B12 in the system....
Just some food for thought
Good Luck
