Ms And Gastric Bypass??

Hi! I have RRMS, and the only symptom I experience is fatigue. I'm pretty lucky I must say. Anyway, since my diagnosis in 2001 I've gained over 100 pounds and CANNOT get it off. I've developed diabetes and high blood pressure. So, I'm having a laproscopic gastric bypass. I was told that some, not ALL patients MAY develop a minor relapse. Has anyone here had this surgery, and if so, how did it go for you?

Re: Ms And Gastric Bypass??

I haven't had it, but if you've developed diabetes and high BP it sounds like a good decision. From what I've read on this site and others, any kind of surgery or trauma can cause a relapse or increase in symptoms, so be prepared. Some people have had IV steroids planned in advance for after a surgery, as soon as it is safe to do so. I don't know if that would be an option for you because of your blood pressure though, and also because steroids increase appetites so much.

One thing that won't hurt is tons of rest. That would be in order after any surgery, but even more so with MS. And hopefully, the surgery won't cause any attacks, and you'll be in better health and more able to deal with MS in the future. Let us know how it goes, and good luck!

I'm afraid because it was the IV steroids and MS that made me blow up to begin with, and the thought of having a relapse and needing steroids is horrifying.

Re: Ms And Gastric Bypass??

Your issue is quite similar to mine. I am considering gastric bypass or lap-band surgery, but am concerned about the effect it will have on my MS body. Did you get any other information on the subject? I am searching the web today hoping to find others who may have already had surgery. For me, I am leaning towards the lap band because it can be removed and it is least invasive. It is a hard decision. Good luck to you and let me know if you find out anything else on the subject.
