Pain behind my left eye - Multiple Sclerosis Message Board

I have been experiencing pain behind my left eye. It is worse when I look into the light or move my eye around too much. I haven't had a diagnosis of ms yet but symptoms persist. Just wondering if this is typical and how long it might persist. This is my second bout of this. The first time it went away on its own, but lasted about 3weeks and was extremely annoying.

lild4, if MS is suspected, I would strongly suggest you getting to an ophthalmologist right away. (In a perfect world, a NEURO-ophthalmologist but to start out, a regular ophthalmologist will do -- I know that it's not always to see an N.O.) What you're describing is very much how a textbook case of Optic Neuritis can start -- pain behind the eye and worse upon movement. ON is very closely associated with MS and can often be a fast route to a dx. (In my case, that's exactly what happened.) I'm not saying it IS ON but I strongly suggest you get it checked out ASAP.

I get pain in my eye that is light related. I have been wearing sunglasses since the first pain affected me. The sunglasses are not perfect, but they do help over 90% of the time. On really bad occasions my right eye shuts and will not open.

Hi,
I was wondering if someone could describe the eye pain associated with ON. Does it feel like eye strain when you are tired? Is it kind of a stretching pulling type pain when you move your eye to the left or right?

For me, the pain varies. Most of my pain is at the back of my eye and is either really painful, radiating pain or pressure. The worst is the pain that radiates because it spreads to the rest of my "noggin". I think that each person experiences it differently.
I use acupressure where the pain radiates and I am usually able to stop it from spreading. Cold compresses can also help.

My Japanese MS friend has no eye pain, just loss of vision that comes and goes.
