Tips on How to avoid getting sick to prevent relapses???

Hi everyone
I am wondering how all of you manage avoiding sickness and avoiding sick people. Being that people with autoimmune diseases should avoid activating the immune system with stress or colds etc....
I am just curious as I am still in between stage, but as a precaution am avoiding Vit C, colds etc. Handwashing is obvious. Everyone in my house needs to wash when they first come in, I carry sanitizer in my car.....
Any other tips or tricks you can share are very much appreciated!
Thanks

Re: Tips on How to avoid getting sick to prevent relapses???

Those of us with MS get viruses and infections just like anyone else. Unless you live in a bubble, do not have children and don't have life there is no way to completely avoid this from happening.

Any increase in MS symptoms will usually resolve once the infection or virus has resolved.

It is recommended by the CDC as well as by many neuros that those with MS get the flu shot.

Re: Tips on How to avoid getting sick to prevent relapses???

I get a yearly flu shot because I had a bad bacterial pneumonia infection a few years ago and because of my MS. Some people taking meds may not be able to have a flu shot.

Even if you take the basic precautions- hand washing, hygiene, eat right, get plenty of rest, and stay hydrated- you can still get sick, especially if you are around children and anyone who does not follow basic precautions.

Since my condition worsened, I have (thank God) been sick only due to MS. I still have a minor allergy that bothers me sometimes, but other than that, life is really good.

I do not know if I am correct or not, but I believe that I get sick less because my immune system is in overdrive. This is my personal, non-medical opinion. Even so, I still take precautions and get my flu vaccine.

Re: Tips on How to avoid getting sick to prevent relapses???

I just wanted to add that I work in healthcare. I have patients close to me who have every single disease known to man, many of which are quarantined. They have C-diff, MRSA, VRE, all of which are serious infections! I go into the rooms, I am in the vincinity all the time of these people. I have MS and Im on Rebif.
I spoke to both the infectious disease doctors who take care of these patients as well as my own Neurologist and MS Specialists- they all tell me the same thing. Take precautions such as washing your hands (that liquid sanitizer does NOT kill virus germs such as the Noro-Virus) use antibacterial soap.....do not touch people with colds or flu's- and if you have to be exposed at all, shower off as soon as possible. I shower each day as soon as I walk into the house. BUT having MS does NOT make you more susceptible to catching these things...you are no more susceptible then anyone else is. MS causes you to have a compromised immune system, not a weakened one. Taking interferons, does not weaken your immune system and might very well strengthen it after a few months. I havent gotten really sick in 3 years that Ive been on Rebif. I do get the flu shot- I do try to take normal precautions...but the sooner you stop worrying about it, the healthier you will be. Stress is more of a immune system weakener then anything else!
Try not to worry..
Nikki

Re: Tips on How to avoid getting sick to prevent relapses???

Thanks for all of your responses. I have always been the person to get sick if anyone sick comes near me. Now that I am aware immune boosting vitamins are out like Vit C, I find I feel draggy for soooo lnng. I make my husband sleep in a seperate room when he is sick. I can't do needles because I have RSD/CRPS which can spread into my arms if I get a needle even.
Thanks for yoir advice

Why

That could hurt your marriage in time

I had 2 children after my diagnosis. I took care of them and stayed up when they were sick. Sometimes I would catch things from them sometimes not. I sleep with my husband even if he is sick and he sleeps with me when I am sick.

Having MS does not make your immune system overactive or underactive nor do the DMDs. Our immune system is compromised or a simplier way - it's confused.

I can go sometimes years without getting sick and then there are some years I pick up everything. Those with MS are the same as the general population - some get everthing that's going around, some don't.

If getting sick affects your MS it's usually only temporary, a Pseudo - exacerbation and is limited to the duration of your illness.

Re: Tips on How to avoid getting sick to prevent relapses???

Thanks for your advice Snoopy!
I am soooo very confused. I pick up every cold and cannot get rid of it. I have chosen to stop the vitamins and felt the best way to stop getting sick is to be very careful and sleep alone when my husband is sick...when I am sick he never seems to catch it.
I am not trying to be paranoid, but I am sooo tired of being injured or sick with something. And I am sooo confused because I have RSD/CRPS and quite possibly MS. I don't know where to turn for answers especially for both diseases combined. My health has gotten much worse this past year and I have just had enough.
I obviously don't want to hurt my marriage, but I am just soo tired of being sick!
Thanks for all advice and help. I am going to try not to worry about these things as much.

Re: Tips on How to avoid getting sick to prevent relapses???

The things I do to avoid colds. (I have two small children)

The minute that anybody in my family gets sick I start with airbourne fizz tablets. I know that recent media has knocked this vitamin fizz however I think it has helped me. I also use Zicam nasal swabs. I firmly believe in these. I also use coldezz cough drops (they have zinc). I believe zinc is more effective than Vit C. Again it seems to work for me. One last therapy is nasal rinse. I flush my nasal passage with a water/saline solution. You can buy at your local pharmacy.

1. nasal rinse
2. zicam swab
3. airbourne fizz

do this morning and night. suck on a few cold ezz throughout the day. You should be good to go. Use sanitary gels and wash hands like crazy. I honestly believe this regimine works. I've had one bad cold since I was dx in 06'. Remember my children have had several. They cough/snot/sneeze all over me, even throw up!

Re: Tips on How to avoid getting sick to prevent relapses???

Cole EEze and Vicam are SOOO NOT RECCOMENDED for MS anxious me!! In fact you are doing your immune system much more harm then good! Zinc is also not recommended in any form!! The all natural nasal rinse, however is a very good thing, especially if you are using a netti pot?

Cold Eeze and Vicam, along with eccenachia and zinc are immune system stimulators- actually the worst thing you can do for your MS symptoms. It might help slow down the common cold and make you think you feel better, but in the long run, its actually encouraging a relapse. Any doctor who understands MS will be able to explain this to you. Any vitamin or supplement shop will tell you to avoid these type of supplements...

A common cold lasts 3-5 days. An over the counter cold medicine to treat the symtoms is so much safer then messing with your immune system.....

Smile Re: Tips on How to avoid getting sick to prevent relapses???

Thanks everyone for all your help. Just realized that my Naturopath had me on an immune boosting adaptogen. I am getting pretty angry because I never know what is and isn't safe and when she says it is I trust her.
She knows there is a good chance I have MS and then puts me on an immune booster. That is seriously careless!!!

Thanks for all tips + tricks. I appreciate all the help I can get!
