Ms?

Hi,
I have been on this site before and people were very helpful. Since then I have had a neg lumbar puncture and thought that MS was off the table. I have been having a lot of symptoms for close to 4 years. I have had several MRIs that were negative. I had one last month and went to the dr yesterday for the results. Now I have a lesion. In addition to that they looked back at a MRI of my spine from 2007 and see another possible lesion. I am having another MRI next week. The dr isn't sure what this is. He said most likely it would have shown up on the LP. I am frustrated. Any thoughts?
Thanks, CK

Re: Ms?

The LP is only effective for 85% of people who are eventually diagnosed with MS. I have had 2 LPs with 20 years separation and I have never had a positive LP. The LP is just one "cog" in the process.

It is not uncommon for lesions to be overlooked. It takes a trained, experienced eye and it also takes luck in timing. I certainly realize the frustrations you have been enduring.

I will keep you in my prayers. Please know that many have been in the spot you are now. You are not alone.

Hello,

I wanted to let you know that I had lesions overlooked on my first MRI. They only saw one lesion with my first MRI. It had been 7 months and I had not taken my follow up MRI they wanted me to take at 6 months. They did the second MRI then did a comparison of the 2 MRIs and said that I had 3 white matter lesions, they were all stable and you could see all 3 in both MRIs. I feel my odds at living a long and happy life are really high with MS. This lead them now down the path of MS. One difference between my first and second MRI is in the first MRI they did not use the sagittal flair technique, from my understanding the sagittal flair technique picks up more white matter lesions. I am learning to not allow my emotions to be heavily affected by testing because stress can cause health problems.

wishing you all happiness,

Postivethinkin

Re: Ms?

What is it that you think is supposed to show up on the LP?? What is your doctor telling you would be positive or negative?

A LP is only used to show Obands- which are indicative of autoimmune disorders...and as Jayhawk stated, only 85% of people with MS even show those Obands. Im negative for them, but have a positive MS dx (and over 50 lesions to back it up).

MRIs, on the other hand, can change from week to week. What was too small one week to show up, can show up the following week. Thats why they are usually repeated every 6 months. Make sure they are using contrast as well, as contrast will show smaller lesions which might be missed without it.

The other reason a LP is given, is infections, especially PML or Meningitis show up in spinal fluid....this test is often run to RULE OUT infections which might present such as MS. Basically if nothing shows up, its still more indicative that MS is the answer, if you have the other supporting evidence (lesions, symtoms). Keep in mind, MS is only diagnosed when everything else is ruled out. and therefore, negative LP results can actually mean a dx of MS!

I wish you well. MS is controllable- its not the worst dx to get! We are all living proof that its manageable and that life does goes on....let us know what you find out!
Nikki

Re: Ms?

Hi,
Thanks for your replies. I think I was just shocked that after so much time something showed up. This leads me to another question....can you have a lesion that means nothing?
In stating that the LP was negative, (which is what I was told) I am guessing that the Obands were not detected. I was told that that meant it was not possible that this was MS. I was also told by that dr that he couldn't do anything for me. That led me back to my original neuro who ordered the MRI and has been following me for the past 2 years. I will have the cervical MRI the first week of Dec. Hopefully that will provide more info. What a waiting game! I hate to say it, but it would almost be a relief just to know what you are dealing with.

Re: Ms?

It absolutely would be a relief to know what you are dealing with! The not knowing is the hardest part. And, yes, you can have a lesion which means nothing. Lesions, are scars....they can come from any brain truama, a car accident, a bump on the head, or an infection from years ago.....only the size, shape and placement will determine if this is MS related or not....

Try to relax..and get the Cspine done.....that should have been done to begin with. Always, with MS they start with the brain and cspine and make sure its with and without contrast....and Ill say a prayer for you that this leads you to answers.

Hang in there...
Nikki

Re: Ms?

Hi Nikki,
I did have a c spine back in 2007. That was negative, but on further review on Monday the MS specialist saw something that looked like a possible lesion. So the new c spine will look at that. I guess the timing of the lesion is a hint too. I had a brain MRI in April and it was fine. Six months. Wow.
Again, thanks for your help. I hope you are doing well. Have a good evening.

Re: Ms?

Ck, sorry- misunderstood that you had already had one Cspine....but honestly, it should be repeated every 6 months, not every 2 years- so you ARE due! Let us know how it goes for you...and take good care of yourself, ok?
I have over 50 lesions on my brain, none on my Spine, and Im still doing very okay- so dont let this get you down!
Hugs,
Nikki
