Me again. Does anyone have any thoughts or information on DMD's and pregnancy? I see my current neuro and a new MS specific neuro in a few wks, so I'll obviously be discussing this with them, but just wondering what you folks think.
My husband and I would like more children (we have one boy age 11.5 months old), and I am most likely going to have to start up on a DMD - probably Rebif. Is it safe to use a DMD and then stop to try and conceive? Or would it be better to try and conceive first, and then deal with the post-pregnancy relapse and treat it then?
Any thoughts / opinions / life-experiences are welcome.
Silver, you absolutely cannot get pregnant on any of the DMDs- birth defects are a problem...
If you are going to try to get pregnant in the next few months- you should hold off on starting Rebif. However, if you are going to be waiting a year or more, start Rebif now, but you'll need to be off of it about 6 months before you attempt at concieving...
Talk to your doctor more but this is what Ive been told and what the insert says..
Nikki
Thanks, Nikki. Yeah, I was under the impression that no conception while on DMD. But I've heard conflicting info regarding whether or not it was safe to conceive after having been on DMD's at all. I've heard that if I start taking Rebif, then really I should be done with having kids. But my current neuro (whom I do not care for, hence my search for new MS neuro) says it's no big deal, do Rebif now, and when the time comes, just go off it for a little while (a month or two) and then try to conceive.
Just wondering if anyone has done that - used DMD, then gone off the drug and had a baby.
I'd be just inclined to conceive now and wait on the drugs, but I'm not sure my health is worth the risk. It took us 3 yrs to conceive our first baby, I know I don't have that kind of time, either.
Silver, for whats its worth, I know several women who have been on both Rebif and Avonex who went off the drugs for several months, got pregnant and had healthy babies...
I also know one who was on Copaxone. I tend to hang out with allot of MSers! I myself, have not gotten pregnant- but have been on Rebif for 4+ years.
I think youll be okay to start the drugs and then consider the baby issue....actually, being stable on Rebif would be good for you before you decide to have a baby..
Alot to talk about with your doctor, but Im reasonably sure that starting any DMD will not affect future baby choices...
