Optic Disc Cupping - MS Symptoms?

I recently had to go to the hospital to see an opthamologist regarding an eye condition that my skin specialist thought I might have relating to my acne rosacea. However, after detailed examination it was confirmed that I did not have any relating conditions but during the examination the opthamologist diagnosed cupping of the optic disc but my eye pressure was normal. On first examination the opthamologist suggested I may have Glaucoma and sent me for a visual field test. I had the visual field test and have lost some peripheral vision to my right eye. I had a follow-up appointment with the opthamologist and he does not believe that I have non-pressure Glaucoma and he has made an appointment for me to have a head MRI with contrast on Saturday 14/5. Over several years I have had the following symptoms which have become increasing worse, dizziness, lost of balance, nausea, blurry vision in my right eye, severe one sided headaches, slight hearing loss and ringing in my ears, numb hands when I wake in the morning, twitchy nerves and pins and needles in my hands and fingers, pins and needs in my feet, very sensitive elbows and a dead heavy right foot on waking. I do have 2 blood clotting disorders factor v leiden and protein c deficiency but I donít think these conditions are related to my symptoms. Why do you think I need an MRI with contrast? and if I have any lesions (even if this is not what they are looking for) will they show up? Any advice would be very much appreciated as I am starting to worry about my appointment on Saturday. Thanks

Re: Optic Disc Cupping - MS Symptoms?

Hi and welcome to the healthboards...

If you have a MRI with contrast, even small lesions will show up. However if you have it without contrast, the chances of them missing things are there...have the contrast if you can tolerate it.

Your symtoms do sound neurologic in nature; however it doesnt scream MS. The optic disc is not usually related to MS, whereas the optic nerve is...(sometimes related).

So many of your other symtoms could be from one of a zillion things- so many things present like MS- try not to worry and consider this a test of elimination...at least if you have the MRI, youll be getting some good radiographic feedback!

Please let us know how you are and what you find out...
