Problems with itching and also numb hands

I was just wondering if itching can be something caused by MS? I've been under alot of stress the past couple of days and yesterday all of a sudden I started feeling nauseous and had intense itching all over. This happened while I was driving. I was perfectly fine all day and it just suddenly happened. The more I scratched the more it itches and wide spread it became. I didn't have a rash or hives. It just felt like my skin was crawling. This episode lasted for about 45 min to an hour. The other question I have is about numb/tingling hands. The past year I've noticed when I wake up my hand is numb and I didn't think about it much but the past month it's felt gradually worse. I don't sleep good anymore because my entire hand goes numb/weird tingling and it last for hours. It doesn't really do this during the day though. But I have noticed I've been dropping things with that hand alot more. I'm still in limbo with a official diagnosis. I havnt had a MRI of my CSpine in over a year and a half and over 1year for a brain MRI. I have an appointment with my neuro soon. Do you think I would be wrong to request new MRI or a lumbar puncture? I switched to this doctor a few months ago and the only new test she did was blood work.

Re: Problems with itching and also numb hands

The itching and "creepy-crawlies" you bet....they are bothersome.

My hand numbness is generally worse in the morning when I arise. I soak my hands in ice cold water. I have gotten up at night to soak them and go back to sleep.

Dropping things is par for the course.

I would definitely discuss getting a new MRI with your new neuro. I would also discuss all of your ongoing problems with your neuro.

Re: Problems with itching and also numb hands

Muracer,
My onset symtom was numb hands. I woke up one morning thinking my hand was asleep, like i slept on it wrong. After a few hours of this, I finally called my doctor who told me it was probably a pinched nerve. This was before I knew I was going to have a life long relationship with a Neurologist....

My GP sent me for a CT scan to look for the pinched nerve as it hadnt resolved itself over the next 24 hours and that CT was my quick ticket to a MRI. My MRI showed over 50 lesions, all in the brain and all pointing towards the hand thing being related to nerve damage in the brain. Ive had several EMGs of my hands over the years and my hands are fine; however heat, humidity and stress really excaberate my hand numbness and tingling.

My point is that an attack on the brain can surely result in numb/ tingling hands and in my case a MS dx! 6 years later, I still have the symtom. My attack was severe enough that it never reversed itself. There are times when it reduces me to tears the pain is so bad. Nothing, Lyrica, Cymbalta, Neurontin, topic things or accupuncture has helped this pain; however I have learned to live with it and I have found that keeping my body cool and running my wrists under ice water does alliviate some of the pain...overall, its a MS symptom. I try to deal with it.

Hope this helps.
Nikki

Re: Problems with itching and also numb hands

I had a short time of some numbness in hands upon wakening..
I tried sleeping with the brace for carpul tunnel and that seemed
to help.. Currently I do not have the problem... gooood luck!!
