Phsycosomatic ms symptoms?! Am I crazy?

Hi, trying to get a dx for what I'm convinced is ms, I'm having no luck :/ my last neuro told me I was phycosamatic, I'm not convinced! I would love some opinions!
My first 'episode' was about 4yrs back. I had severe dizzy spells and kept walking sideways and running into things, I had insanely painful burning sensations on the skin on my right thigh and lower back like someone had poured boiling water on me, this would last for many hours at a time and be so bad often I couldn't wear clothes or bed sheets. I also had some numbness & tingling in my legs and right, ahem, vulva, that would come and go. At times my legs would get so week that if I didn't sit down immediately I would fall to the ground, i usually felt a bit hazy at these times. These symptoms lasted about 2 months, towards the end of this time I went see a neuro after my family dr said he thought I had ms, he said he thought it was caused by stress, he took an MRI but said he didn't expect to find anything, which he didn't. I excepted his opinion and slowly improved to nearly normal.

About 3yrs later, or maybe 8months ago, I had my 2nd 'episode', lasting about 3mnths. It started out much like the first, and got a lot worse! My legs would give out without warning and I would end up on the floor, this happened several times a day for nearly a month and I spent most of the day on the couch, at my worst I was completely paralysed on the floor for about a minute before I would slowly gain use of my body again, my mother had to stay with us to care for my 1yr old daughter. I developed a limp on my right side and could hardly use my right arm, I had numbness and buzzing all over my body, particularly in my hands and feet. At night my legs would ache badly, pain killers would do nothing, and the tops of my hands and feet would feel as if they had coals on them, often I would get up in the middle of the night to run cold water over them for some relief. I would also wake up to intense electrical pain that shot down my spine from the base of my skull. I developed strange migrains (I've always had migrains triggered by wheat alergies but these were very different and I hadn't touched wheat) they would start with complete numbness in my left hand and left side of my face, lips and tounge, as if I'd had a local anesthetic, then would come the most intense crushing headaches that would last for up to a day, I would be incompasitated and vomit from the pain, painkillers did nothing. And the FATIGUE!! I was always sleeping! After colapsing at my drs and being sent to hospital overnight(where they did nothing) my dr said he was convinced it was ms and refered me to a new neuro, but I couldn't get an appointment for 8wks. My symptoms other than the migrains slowly began to improve, by the the time my app rolled round I was much better, nearly normal, and had just found out I was pregnant with my second. This dr told me he couldnt do any tests because I was pregnant, though he was very confident that it sounded nothing like ms, as I had too many symptoms and he was sure it was phycosamatic and was gone now so not to worry. Coincidently, it turns out this same dr labled my mum as phycosamatic 30 yrs ago when she was very ill with what was later diagnosed as vastibular neuritis and NOT phycosamatic!!

I do NOT believe this is all in my head, at the time of the last attack onset I was on top of the world! I was happy and not stressed at all!!!

3days ago I started with dizzy spells again, and my limp has returned, with some of the general numbness, tingling and colapsing. I have also got a cloudy spot in my vision in my right eye with eye pain and lights in the edges of my vision. while cooking dinner 2 nights ago i felt a lightning bolt down my spine and I instantly fell to the floor paralysed for a second or so without warning. However today no colapsing or limping, so hopfully I'll get better and not start another episode!!

Please someone tell me I'm not crazy!! Does this sound like ms??

Re: Phsycosomatic ms symptoms?! Am I crazy?

Welcome

MS is actually mostly in our heads because this is where lesions would be most likely to form. You do not have a lot to choose from in the way of doctors in WA and outside of Perth, I would not expect to see any real specialists! You noted that you had been seen by a neurologist. Was this neurologist an MS Specialist?

Your second episode may well have been MS returning but your pregnancy could have suppressed the MS. Estriol is a hormone produced during pregnancy which can suppress MS. This may also explain why your "MS" is re-appearing for a third time.

There are over 400 diseases which can present with MS like symptoms. Stress and anxiety can be standalone problems or coupled with MS. It really is difficult to know and a specialist should be seen to help separate things.

From what you have described, I would in no way consider yourself to be psychosomatic. Your regular doctor's perception, I believe, is pointing in the right direction. Your regular doctor may be able to order tests for you while you wait for an appointment with an MS Specialist. I never saw one in Perth, but I saw one in Brisbane and in Singapore.

MS Australia has a well organized website. You might start with them and they can help provide you with information you might need. I would also go online print a copy of the Revised McDonald Criteria which can help guide you through the process.

Again, Welcome. You are among friends and you are not alone.

Re: Phsycosomatic ms symptoms?! Am I crazy?

Just to add, should you get an MRI scheduled, it should be with and without contrast and it should be for your head and Cervical Spine (neck) at a minimum. If possible, have them also do your thoracic spine too (neck to chest). Your initial MRI may have been too early to detect lesions OR your neuro might have overlooked them if there were but 1 or 2. Please make sure an MS Specialist reads your images. Since they are digital, if needed, the WA neuro could easily transmit them to a colleague on the Eastern side unless you want to hand carry them on the red-eye! .

Re: Phsycosomatic ms symptoms?! Am I crazy?

Smellonycricket,

Although i would never say this is "all in your head" - I do have to point out that your symtoms, such as the paralysis which lasted a full second, are not MS like . Neither are the constant falls, where you regain ability to walk normally. This sounds like it could be muscular, rather than neurologic in nature. MS, is a progressive disease caused by attacks on the central nervous system. No "episode" lasts seconds or minutes, and things do not happen randomly, only to go away a day later.....with MS, its much more progressive and is only remedied with time.

The fact that your pregnancies made things better for you, IS odd though, because as Jayhawk stated, when an MSer is pregnant, the body is protected, and therefore usually feels fine....directly after delivery, however, the body is usually forced into an attack, due to the drop in hormones.

Obviously, you know your body better than anyone else and if you are positive that something isnt right- go wit your gut and continue advocating for yourself....continue seeking out a MS specialist, who can both dx you, or tell you where you would be better off being seen.

I hope you feel better. I do not think this is "all in your head" I do think something is wrong, but its not easy to say this is MS like when so many of your symtoms really arent...and so many typical MS symtoms, you didnt mention.

Please keep us posted and know we are here if you need to vent or ask questions.

Nikki

Re: Phsycosomatic ms symptoms?! Am I crazy?

Thankyou for replying! I actually got pregnant with my first some time after I was feeling better, six months at least. Interesting though this pregnancy coincided with my recovering from symptoms! I was heart broken at first as I felt I was incapable of caring for it, I'm feeling much mor positive now. Unfortunately my regular dr, who was wonderful, retired recently. My new dr seems quite nice so far, and he has the same opinion. He has referred me to another neuro but your right, there seems to be no specialist here, and I don't have the means to leave the state to see one.

It is not cheap to travel to the east. You might be able to do a digital consult. I had customers in Albany and Esperance and they used such consultation without having to leave there local doctor. I would give this a try and also work with the MS Australia folks.

Re: Phsycosomatic ms symptoms?! Am I crazy?

The following towns in WA have MS groups and nurses. The main MS center is in Wilson.

Group support and nurses are available in Rockingham, Albany, Beechboro Lodge, Bunbury, and Joondalup. I realize WA is a vast territory, but I am sure one of these facilities can be reached. The Wilson Centre offers physiotherapy and they have a pool. There are also a couple of places for MS care and a respite house for your family caregivers near the beach. I think your needs can be well met in WA without flying to another state.

Thanks for your reply Nikki, I think maybe I didn't do a very good job of describing my symptoms, I was trying not to babble when I say I was paralised for a minute (not a second) I didn't mean I could just get up and walk normaly again, I mean I regained SOME movement and was no longer totaly 'paralised'. In fact when this happened my husband carried me to bed where I slept for several hours. Let me explain a typical day during the worst couple of weeks in my last episode. I would get up late, say 10am after a terrible night of buzzing, twitching and electrical sensations down my spine, I would slowly make it to the couch and have a cuppa, made by mum. After about an hour i feel reasonably good and get up and make some breakfast. I would tell myself "this is all in your head, there's nothing wrong with you now get on with it!" I would try get some things done, my legs would feel like lead, I would kick my righ toe alot, I could only use my left arm as my right was too weak and I would stumble like a drunk person till eventually my legs gave out and I ended up on the floor. After a while I would either be helped to or crawl to the couch, though a couple of times I just layed right there on the kitchen floor & took a nap. After resting for a while I'd get stubborn again, tell myself it was all in my head and start the whole cycle again. After a week or two I was able to stand up for longer and longer at a time until I recovered, though I never really got back to my old self. I didn't just recover from symptoms over night.
Hope this explains things better

What a small world! We kept some inventory in Bunbury for our dealers. I stopped there on my way to Albany. We would start in Geraldton and work our way down to Albany and out to Esperance. If you live near Bunbury, you have some beautiful country to see each day!
