Re: New to boards Vacation Dilemma

Kim, Hi and welcome to healthboards! Im glad you found us!!!

I live in that area of NJ and I have to tell you, there is very little handicapped accessible at the new jersey shore area. The best I have found is in Atlantic City....Ocean City is an absolute TON of walking and the beach is a mile from the boardwalk to the ocean, so if you plan on going in the ocean, you really need to be able to walk thru the sand. I do not know much about OC MD...sorry.

There are wheelchairs which you can rent, which have tires on them made for sand and surf, you would have to look into this where you live and rent one from a medical equiptment company...but it is possible.

There are also alot of places in the a/c area where you can rent handicapped rooms in both the casinos and regular hotels...the AC beach is actually quite nice and there are plenty of places to eat and drink along the boardwalk....

Best of luck to you in this and let us know how it turns out.

Re: New to boards Vacation Dilemma

Welcome.

There are many disabled access informational websites available. Most (if not nearly all) national recreational areas would have disabled access available. In addition to wheelchairs, there are also all terrain power chairs which have many drive trains but will go easily wherever you want to go and many are available for rent.

If you have a particular town in mind, I would encourage you to contact the tourism office which will be able to assist you with any disabled access questions you might have. I traveled to over a dozen state and federal parks last summer and all of them had disabled access, though nature limits certain areas.

If you are disabled, you and anyone who travels with you, can get a lifetime pass to national parks. The card is issued to the disabled person and they can use it for several people. I had 15 people in one vehicle.

I hope you have a fun and memorable vacation. Please be mindful of the heat and stay well hydrated.
