i am taking my nephew to ms specialist and trying to be prepared . i appreciate it if someone have suggestions as what tests to do BEFORE seeing rd. he was diagnosed overseas based on one MRI . now we are going to see a very expensive dr. in new jersey.and i dont want to go to have him tell me he needs a bunch of tests. i want to do them ahead of time and have actually give me an openion.
Hi again. Unfortunately, the tests that you will need, have to be ordered by the doctor you are seeing. Especially with an MS specialist, if they didnt order them, or they werent done where they request them to be done, they are going to reorder them. Thats just the way these guys operate. The MS center at RWJ has everything you could possibly need or want as far as MS tests go; however, they have to be ordered by a neurologist who participates.
The tests you can anticipate are newer MRIs, if his are more than 6 months old...possibly a spinal tap- this is done to see if Obands are present and also to rule out other diseases which mimic MS- they will probably do a host of bloodwork, but again, if it is more than a month old, theyll repeat it.....looking for vitamin deficiencies and for lows and highs of different levels. They will probably want to do some nerve conduction studies, if he is showing any signs of weakness in any of his extremeties....arms/hands/legs/ feet.
There isnt much you CAN do until you see his doctor unfortunately. I was a patient of another doctor, who actually worked with this group years ago, who ordered all my MRIs and LP (spinal tap)- when I got into see Dr B and Dr Jalbut, they reordered everything. The same results appeared, but they wanted them done by, and read by, their own team.
Sorry that probably isnt what you want to hear......but thats the way most MS specialists work. If you happen to have the old MRI films and reports, if you have any blood work results or any labs, bring them with you....but be prepared to have them repeated.
When is the appointment? Please keep us updated!
his apointment is sept. 13 . the problem is going to be cost as we have no insurance for him over here. do you know if these guys have any programs to help people with no insurance.( kind od like MS med. manifacturers). i think i know the answer to that .but i just had to ask.
Hi. Im sorry, but I do not know. Youl have to call them and ask. I do know they will work out a payment plan with you, especially if you talk to them upfront and tell them your situation. They very well may have something in place- its a very large University hospital, but unfortunately, I do not know what they offer. The only thing I know is that they do accept credit cards and will work out payment plans.
good luck to you!

The MS Association has funding for MRI's. You can print the form off their web site and your doctor can help you file it. If your nephew qualifies, the MRI would be without cost. They also have a lending program for some equipment such as a cooling vest, etc.
MS diagnosed since October 3, 1982
MS onset circa 1977
