Smoking and MS

Here goes...my neuro said that if further testing doesn't show MS...the ovoid plaques found on 2 MRI's in/on left and right frontal lobes, could be due to smoking. Has anyone ever been told this by your neuro?? Does smoking cause ovoid plaques? I can't seem to find anything related to this in all of my searches except vascular wise and had MRA done and it was good. If anyone has any supported info on this, I'd really like to hear it. Thanks.

Re: Smoking and MS

I have only read about links between cardiovascular plaque and smoking, but never ovoid plaque. You might ask your doctor to show you the links. Now, that said, smoking and MS do not make for a good mix for you.

Again, ask your doctor to share his source for said link. If it exists, I think I would like to know so that I can increase my knowledge! Thanks!!

Me too! First he started out trying to say it was due to my headaches...just like the last neuro..and I told him that I do not get enough headaches to even talk about so then he said well it could be due to smoking then. Why is it so hard to get neuros to listen and understand you?? I mean, 2 MRI's showing plaques and that's what he first says! Oh I will be asking him...if my testing don't show up anything, and he says this again, I'm going to ask him to show me some evidence of smoking causing these plaques.

Re: Smoking and MS

My neurologist has told me often that smoking causes ovoid plaques....

We do not post links here, but there is information out there on how this takes place; and you most certainly can ask your doctor to show you.

Smoking, and MS dont mix....now, that being said...many MSers smoke. Its more likely they will develop lung issues (Pulmonary problems) than make their MS worse, however the effects of smoking long term can definately show up on a MRI.
