any advice preparing for first neuro appt w ms specialist

Jayhawk an nikki, i have my first appointment with the ms specialist friday. I would like to be a little more prepared than i was for thr neuro surgeon we was with him less than 5 minutes an walked out saying we didnt ask this or that an he was very short an dismissive. I kinda got a vague not exact time frame of diffrent symptoms. Heck this summer i felt great most of it except some dizzyness an if i carried alot.if furniture a little sore. I definatley am hoping he can explain the mri report more to me as the other dr offered me pt injections an surgery an that was it visit was over. No explanations other than it would cause problems in my arms. I am still having alot of anxiety at times an that is one of my biggest problems an brain fog dizzyness. So any thoughts as to how to make the most out of this visit. I know he cant answer everything. I havve questions as to.vit d intake along with other meds also went to er las week thought was having heart attack they gave me nitro an whole work up was terrible pain in chest broke out in cold sweat short breath my work up ekg was fine. My heart rate was up. Wondering if that is symptom. Jus so many questions . I am trying very hard to get anxiety under control. Doing guided imagery with therapist stretches baking working whatever it takes an occasinal xanax. Dont mean to ramble but your thoughts are appreciated along with any others who has any. Thanks tami

You need not worry about being exact. A nice summary written simply should suffice. I would bring someone or make a note of questions you might wish to ask. You can prioritize your questions.

just be frank with your answers to the questions asked and your first visit should go well.

Hi Tami.

I think that first of all, you just proved that you can put your questions into perspective. You need to write them all down! Just like you just did to us...

Vitamin deficiencies is something he can talk to you about...

Explaining the MRI is something you can ask him to do...it will help if you take the MRI films and report with you if you have them (try to have them).

The issue you experienced with chest pain is probably NOT a symptom, but more of an anxiety symptom....its not an MS thing- but I would tell him about it, because it may justify exactly how anxious you are.

Take a list of any meds you are currently taking and how often you take them.

Take a list of the most current symptoms you are having and be able to tell him how long they have been going on..

Do not expect him to read anything you take with you, but use it so that you dont forget anything.

If you can take someone with you to help you remember both what you want to say and what he says- that would be helpful.

Go into this as if you were interviewing him. Be calm- and be considerate. He doesnt know how badly you have been treated in the past. Dont let you past experiences dictate how this goes....but also keep in mind- NEUROSURGEONS CUT. If they cant cut, they suggest injections! They are all about elminiating pain. Neurologists are all about diagnosing diseases and treating symptoms.....if this one says something to you that you dont understand, STOP HIM and ask for clarification. You should NOT walk out with any unanswered questions.....you can even start by saying that you have some questions and you would like to know if you can get them answered. He may want to examine you first, but make sure he gives you ten minutes just to talk....its important that you leave feeling like you got your answers.

Notoriously, MS specialists dont have great bed side manner....but they are usually brilliant doctors. You just have to steer the conversation to the questions you have....so, start by writing them down and getting your thoughts in order.

Best of luck to you. Ill send you positive thoughts! Let us know how it goes.

Nikki

I agree that much anxiety comes from the unknown. Limbo land, if long term, can try one's soul. Obtaining an answer can bring relief when you know that which you are facing.

Although you bring someone with you, make sure you ask the questions unless you are unable to speak.
