I can still walk, but I want a wheelchair already.

I'm a 22 year old female. I have LGMD. I can still walk, but very slowly I wobble a lot have horrible balance. I have a very hard time rising from a chair and can only do so with a table in front of me. I don't try going up steps because I'm too scared of falling. I can't get up if I fall.

Even though I can still walk around, I am dreaming of the say I get a power scooter. I'm just tired of being scared and I'm tired of being looked at.

I feel if I have a scooter I'll be so much more outgoing and happy honestly.
I won't be scared of falling or taking a step. My legs also burn really badly when I walk even a few hundred feet. I'm not only physically tired but mentally tired.

I'm so comfortable walking around at home, I never even think of my MD at home. It's a whole different story out in public though.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Re: I can still walk, but I want a wheelchair already.

Hello there SelmaG its Heidi here, unbelievable that over 500 people have looked at your post but no comments so I thought I would.....

The feelings you describe about feeling wobbly, stairs, unable to get up if you fall (which is why we are so scared of walking) rising from chairs feeling comfy at home but not once you leave home......
That is totally me and you are not alone I have those EXACT same feelings and it is horrible......with regards to the scooter then I believe that you never know what is around the corner and you should do anything at all possible to make you life today more comfortable/enjoyable/easier less stress etc.

So go for it and keep in touch and let us know how you go....Hxx

Re: I can still walk, but I want a wheelchair already.

Hi S

I also have LGMD and FHSMD combined.

I can still walk at home holding on to a wall but I cannot get up on my own anymore
I bought a scooter many years ago and believe me the freedom you have is amazing.

People still look at you but for a different reason (something unusual for a young person to use)

Let us know when you get one and how it feels to have a kind of "freedom"

M
