DM and Boop , Need some info

Hi, I'm new and have been reading your posts for about a month now. My 59 yr old husband had DM diagnosed 13 yrs ago and had been in remission for 10 years. 8 weeks ago he came down with a respiratory infection and we noticed that his fingers were looking like DM again. To make a long story short, he is now in the hospital after a thoracotomy and has been diagnosed with Boop. His ox levels are decreasing even with continuous oxygen and he seems to be getting worse. He's lost 45 lbs. He's been on 80mg of Prednisone and Imuran for about about 10 days. Does anyone have this complication and how do we proceed. We're calling Mayo Monday on the advice of his pulmonologist. I don't read too much that is encouraging and am wondering if anyone out there has gone through this. Thanks in advance, Bethany

Re: DM and Boop , Need some info

I developed the skin rash that is characteristic of DM, one year after a tick bite and target rash. About 5 years later I had a severe bought of a pnemonia for which the Drs could find no cause, but it cleared up rapidly after antibiotic treatment. I would suggest that your husband be tested for Lyme Disease, and be treated with a broadspectrum antibiotic, such a Doxycycline or Minocycline, for 6 months or longer.

National Jewish Medical & Research Center in Denver is where my husband went after similar episode. I would try them. In the hospital he was on pulse doses of steroids and eventually was discharged.
