tapering off Medrol

I have been on Medrol for 25 years for Polymyositis. I am having a hard time coming off of it. I have tried the every other day method. I have been to 2 endos and neither of them have been willing to do any thing but have me tapper down a half pill a month. This has been going on for 6 years. I read on one post that someone used ACTH. I had mentioned this to one endo and he was totally against it. My cortisol level goes down to one and I feel almost dead. This goes on until the next blood work so then they increase the dose and we start again. If anyone can offer some help I would appreciate it.
