Anyway, it hurt a lot for few days and the pain went away. The nail turned black but there was no pain. About few days ago, I noticed my toe nail was coming loose from the base (where it meets the cuticle) and it's getting looser and looser each day. Is this normal after a toe nail injury? Am I loosing this toe nail for good? Will it grow back? Should I get it removed or should I just leave it alone until it comes out on it's own?
I made an appointment with my doctor but, that's still few days away... and I'm getting really worried...
Please help.
Thank you.

I seriously doubt if the doctor will remove the nail as long as it is firmly attached to the remainder of the nail bed. Since it is turning loose at the cuticle, that is the area that sustained the most damage and built up the most blood between the nail bed and the nail plate. As long as the nail root (matrix) is in tact, a new nail will emerge and push the damaged portion toward the free edge. This can take from 3-6 months depending on your natural nail growth patterns which are genetic.
Keep the area clean and dry, change your socks if they become damp, and do not wear the same pair of shoes every day; change shoes daily as well. The open, lifted area can easily become infected with pseudomonas bacteria or fungal spores. Your doctor may suggest anti-bacterial ointment until the nail heals.
